I'm looking to burn .avi's to DVD. At the moment I have Memorex DVD-R and have found them to be terrible. They would work for 2 -5 uses and then stop working.

I'm hoping someone can recommend a good quality/dependable DVD for recording video files to.

Verbatim are usually good, depends which factory they originally come from but you have no way of knowing, in the time I have been using them I have had no burn failures due to media and I can use 20 - 25 / month.

Verbatim/Tayio Yuden/Maxell/*Some Sony discs would be some of the highly rated ones, it all really depends on the DVD media codes, a great article on it HERE

They are not multi-session discs. After i burn an avi, i play it on a standalone dvd player. This will work for a few times until the DVD player cannot read the disc anymore, or else it will skip constantly or just stop playing.

The software i use is 'ConvertXtoDVD'. Find it very easy to use.

As for the hardware, not sure if this is what you're looking for but under System Info it says: DVD/CD-ROM Drives - HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N.

Probably not what you're looking for! If you tell me where to get the info i'll post it up

yes, same for all. It is possible, however, that the stack i have at the moment has been exposed to quite a lot of sunlight (while stacked, not directly). Have a feeling that might be part, if not all of the problem.

Another vote for Verbatim here. Have never had a coaster or any problems after burning with them...

Definitely keep them out of direct sunlight if possible
Perhaps try burning at lower speeds if you're doing them at 16x, this could possibly be part of the problem

I would always burn 16x media at 8x as it can improve the overall burn quality of the disc, it only takes around 8 minutes~ anyways :)

When I use ConvertXToDVD, between the conversion and the burning it takes about 90-120 minutes. That normal?

Very normal, the "Burning" bit would take around 8 mins if recording at 8x, but the encoding the video to DVD format could take a while, ConvertXToDVD is very CPU bound, so the better CPU you have the quicker it will encode :) Burning times are generally much of a muchness

It's very easy to know if they're made by Taiyo Yuden or not, as they use very specific packaging and spindles. The 50 disc spindles will look exactly like these, except with Verbatim (or whatever) printing: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/That's_CD-R.jpg

    more info: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f33/taiyo-yuden-faq-178622/

Most Verbatim DVD-Rs I've seen in shops recently have been made by CMC - I would not recommend these.

yoyo: Optimal burning speeds vary with different discs and drives. 8x may be good for whatever you have now but may be crap for other discs. I have some Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD-Rs (Verbatim branded 50 pack, TYG03), and seem to get the best results at 12x - if I go lower it seems to reduce the burn quality. You can use Nero DiscSpeed for checking quality.
