I currently setting myself up as self employed. It will be another few weeks before I can start to see any return and even then it will be small for quite a while.

Is there anything I can claim while I'm getting it off the ground.

I have to say I totally understand where you are coming from. I don't know the answer to your query but I do know the current rules and regs at the social really do not promote and encourage those on the dole to have a go at being self employed only it forces them to stay on the dole. I for one would gladly take a reduction in my payment ( something similar to the back to work scheme ) if given a chance to start up my own thing again. All the money ( dole payment and earnings ) would be put together and let them take the correct tax for a person in my situation, but no, you have to be minimum 2 years signing on which only encourages people to stay signing and wait. IF THERE ARE ANYBODY FROM THE SOCIAL READING THIS can you please tell if there is any scheme or whatnot available to help with original thread as who knows, if for example there was 100k likeminded people who are signing on but would like to take a chance and a cut in payments think of the money saved, tax paid and maybe a chance to employ someone else along the way. (average cut in dole, € 50 each , money saved = € 260 million a year, plus tax on top , plus further employment !) I'm wasted on the dole. Of course you could say go and find a job, but in this climate we need people to create jobs , enterprise, whatever you want to call it so I suppose until a WAGE PAYING job comes along I'll have to wait for 2 years getting full payment and draining the economy of its badly needed funds. Any input from social welfare workers would be appreciated.

It would be great if they could encourage individuals in unemployment to become self employed (if they have the skills needed) by provided some kind of a payment to get them through those tricky early months.

the back to work enterprise allowance is what you need but unfortunatly as stated above , it requires 2 years of dole to qualify. However they will count time spent on fas courses etc. Have a look on welfare.ie and citizens information. You may find a local partnership running a start your own business scheme in your area.
