A man who shot at three policemen has been jailed for 30 years at the Old Bailey.

Prosecutors said Carlton Sam, 23, of Holloway, north London, opened fire when the officers stopped him in March 2008. Sam, who admitted firearms offences, but denied three counts of attempted murder, was found guilty on two counts. As the verdict was announced, Sam shouted at Pc Michael Caroll and made a gun gesture with his hand. Gesturing at Pc Caroll, Sam said:

"I'll blow your chest off. I should have shot your face clean off."

Mr Justice Owen adjourned the court for 15 minutes following the outburst. The judge jailed him for 30 years on each on the two attempted murders, 10 years for having a revolver with intent to resist arrest and six years each on two firearms charges. The sentences will be served concurrently. The jury cleared him on a third count of attempted murder.

Pcs Michael Carroll, Richard Cousins and Barry Leban had a "lucky" escape, the Old Bailey heard. Three shots were fired at the officers when they stopped Sam in Myddleton Avenue to speak to him, the court heard.

Gunman tried to kill PCs, court told

    Published Date: 14 January 2009

A north London gunman "brazenly" tried to kill three police officers when he fired at them in the street, the Old Bailey heard. Although the shots were fired from feet away, the PCs had a lucky escape, the jury heard.

They had stopped Carlton Sam as he walked along Myddleton Avenue, Manor House, north London in March last year. But as the officers tried to speak to him, Sam pulled a revolver out of his waistband and fired at one officer and then another, Crispin Aylett QC, prosecuting, said. After running off, Sam was chased by a third officer and PC Barry Leban. He stopped and fired the gun for a third time. Sam had also pointed the gun at other officers in a police van but the weapon had not been fired, Mr Aylett alleged.

He told the court: "The defendant, in broad daylight, brazenly fired a gun at three officers. It was a callous and shocking thing to do."

Sam had thrown his gun into a bush after a police vehicle caught up with him, he said. Mr Aylett said Sam had admitted firing the gun but denied trying to harm the officers. After his arrest, he said: "I am an animal. It's what animals do." Sam, 24, of Holloway, denied three counts of attempted murder but admitted firearms offences.

Well this dribbler won't be shooting at anyone for a long long time. Nice of him to make such an outburst just prior to sentencing :D Good result. Enjoy the porridge.

I worked with these officers and know them well. They did a stand up job.

A decent sentence dished out for once...

A good sentence considering the officers survived and the scumbags actions in the court leaves no room to make excuses. His only regret was not killing them and getting away
