There should be a lever and once you snap it shut it doesn't move. The lever is located beside the suction part.

    I'll try find a picture

Don't forget to take it off the window when parked up..;)

I seem to remember there's a little protective plastic thing on the sucker when you buy it .. you obviously have to remove this first, also make sure the area of windscreen you're sticking it to is squeaky clean first.

Even when you've figured out how to put it up correctly, the Garmin mount will still fall down with monotonous regularity. Do yourself a favour and get a Garmin bean-bag mount.

Also do yourself a favour and don't leave it on the window! Or make sure there isn't a big circle mark when you take it off. All tell tale signs there is one in your glove box.

    Not at all.....

    Clean windscreen

Rub a bit of spit (lovely) on the suction cap

    Attach to windscreen

Mine hasn't budged in around 12 months

A bit of spit cures all :D

Actually, I've found the same problem as Anan1, even after giving the windscreen a very good clean. Especially on a hot day (so I suppose it's not that regular!).

Anan1 - do those beanbag mounts require anything to be permanently stuck to the car or are can they easily be used in different cars?

Tried spit, tried everything, must be the way I drive! And when the thing does fall, it always picks the worst possible moment.

Mine only fell off once in about 12 months.
    Spit is great :)
I.m not too sure about the beanbag, don't think it would be secure enough - ie move around too much

The nav mounts to the bag, and the bag just sits on the dash. Honestly, they're great.

Thanks - they look like a good option. How do they not slide around? Some dashboards seem to have quite slippy surfaces that even adhesives don't stick to.

There's a bit of weight to them, they're flexible, and the bottom is grippy. Short of crashing, it won't move. I was a bit iffy too, until I got the thing.

Or better still get a proper mount.

That involves drilling your car, I'd think most people don't want to do that to mount a Sat Nav. Makes your car a prime target for a window smashing.

That looks excellent, I think I will give it a go. I am thinking of getting the US maps for my Garmin and using it on a holiday over there so it would be most handy - especially as you're not allowed use a windscreen mount in California.

Great idea this. Easy to remove too when you park in the city.

It looks like it would slide all over the place, but I'll take your word for it!

    No it doesn't.

It's a system where you buy two parts, the Garmin (or any other type such as Nokia, Motorola, TomTom, whatever) mount, and a ProClip mount that (in my case at least) just slips into a gap in the trim on my central console. The Garmin mount then attaches with screws onto the ProClip mount. I can remove the universal mount any time I like, and if I get a different model of car, I can retain the Garmin mount, and just screw it onto a new ProClip mount.

That looks good, I went about the site the wrong way:o Does your GPS have any issues finding sats when mounted low on the dash?

No none at all. See the following photos ...

That's one immaculate car! Pikeys would have a field day in mine. I think I spotted a racoon under the passenger chair last week!

Just wondering if anybody has mounted theirs up beside their reaRView mirror(on the left of it).I have done so,and hidden the cable by tucking it in around the windscreen. This method require a cig lighter extension lead(1 of the few items available cheaply in Maplin approx €8)If you have a sunscreen across the top of your windscreen it disguises the GPS quite well, and is a convenient location to view it.

Looks like a standard phone mount to me.

    @ Henry Ford III
I reckon that mount is dangerously low down! It is a good solid mount though.

I used to stick mine in the center of the windscreen low down by the dash, but it was impossible to reach. I saw a taxi driver with his mounted beside the A pillar and mines been there ever since. Makes it really easy to change settings in traffic, mute it etc.

    As regards mounts,
The first time mine fell of it scared the bejaysus out of me.. when it fell it hit the release catch so then the gps flew off in one direction while the mount went another way.. the loud noise & seeing something flying off the dash can give you one hell of a scare. Glad I wasn't hustling through a tight bend..

I think it was caused by the temperature change as I had put it on the screen on a cold morning and once the car warmed up it dropped.
The spit fix did the trick, however it leaves that tell-tale ring.
Running the power cable over sucks a bit, If I was a frequent user I would try and get a power cable run up through a vent in the dash.

Mine arrived yesterday - about €30 delivered. It really has an excellent grip. It doesn't really fit to the right of the steering wheel where my windscreen mount was, but because it can go anywhere on the dash there's loads of space for it to be visible without being an obstruction. I gave the power cable a good tug to see if it would move, and all that happened was the cradle tilted - the bean bag itself didn't budge.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

Also don't forget to give the window a quick wipe. Lots of these are leaving a noticeable black mark on the window, which thieves spot, break your window, and take it from your glove box.

Have the bean bag mount myself and its a genius bit of kit.

Doesn't slide at all perfect position for both driver and front passenger to see and your passenger to change settings for you.

Re other mount thats the position that Hertz use in the US for there never lost GPS and its a pain to view. You have to keep looking down from the road rather than just looking slightly left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,160 ✭✭✭✭Berty

I have mine mounted on a vent clip. Its now on the centre console and when I get out of the car and put the unit in the glove box you would have to look hard to see the clip on the vent. Cleared up that blind spot on the window.

BTW, I have a Tom Tom One V1 Europe.

Vent clip was around €15 + delivery from the UK on Ebay.

I still have to play around with the positioning of the bean bag thingy, but from what I can tell there are a couple of spots on the dash where there is little or no obstruction of the view, but obviously that all depends on your car, seat height & position and so on.

That may be due to legislation in some states (California?) that prohibits mounting anything on the windscreen. Personally I intensely dislike having anything in my line of sight like that which is why I have mine where I have it, and don't find the quick glance a problem at all, not that I have to do much of that with the voice prompts.
