Hi ,just wondering is there any harm having a network drive powered on from a timer plug.
Concern would be any spike etc.

Some of the NAS devices have a power down/sleep function. Have a read throught the manual or web interface.

The power cuts will effect the firmware/Raid on any NAS box's after a while. Most are low power and standby mode is similar in range to normal drawdown to make it not worth it.

The reason i was going to use a timer is because since I got the drive ,I've noticed people complaining about the drive burning out.(Was checking out how to set it up)
I put this down to it being left on all the time and thought that having it timed to go off at night would save it.

This unit is only a western digital my book with ethernet ,would i have to worry about the controller getting damaged on it ?
maybe i shouldn't have called it a nas drive ,never used anything like this before.

I wouldn't use a timer plug. You're at huge risk of dive corruption if it is being written to when the power goes.

When you say 'drive burning out', what do you mean?

    thanks for the reply ,
the problem seems to be the controller burns out ,few people opened the drive when it stopped working and said the controller cpu was burnt.
I was thinking if i buy a seven day timer and maybe just once a week let it power off for a few hours at night.

Sounds like you're using it in an office then?

The mybook I would guess is really made for home use. For the office, you're obviously giving it a run for it's money. It might be an idea to spend a bit more on a unit which is designed for a corporate environment and high-volume use.

NASs are made to be run 24/7. It's unlikely that the mybook burnt out during the low-volume over-night period (although it could just be a faulty unit) so having it off isn't really going to have much of an effect.

cheers for the suggestion about it not being under load at night ,makes sense alright.

the drive is being used at home ,its just the last few days I've started backing up machines and reinstalling software.
Everything seems to be going t1ts up ,getting registry problems and dvd drives not working ,re-routing ethernet:rolleyes:
Don't work in IT ,so everything takes twice as long.

    Cheers ,
    Brian.
