Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but after searching the forum I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I imported a car that will be 4 yrs old next october (10/2009). It will therefore require an NCT. Do I need to put this car on the NCT system now or can I wait until october when the NCT is due? thus continuing to drive around without an NCT sticker. Just the legal answer please as opposed to what I can get away with..

    thanks all.

I have the same sort of question as mine is 03/06/05.

Why would we need to apply (pay) for an early NCT Test if the car won't be 4 years old until June or October in his case??

What is important to note here folks that you would think that after you have registered your car in the state, that it would be up on the NCT database, but this unfortunatley is not the case. You need to go down to your nearest NCT outlet and ask for a form to register an imported car on the NCT database. You have to fill out this form, you will need your Vehicle Registration Certificate for information like chassis cumber, engine number, etc.

Also, if it is a UK import, you will need the original registration paperwork, as you will need to know when the vehicle was first registered in the UK, but you might be able to get this through Cartell, I'm not sure but I know I had some problems with this in the past doing this on behalf of a customer.

But get the form from the NCT first and fill it out. It is straightforward enough once you have the Vehicle Registration Certificate and you know when the car was first registered in the UK as a new car...

Not true in my case anyway. Once I registered my car and got my reg, I got a letter from NCT giving me the due date.

    Can someone clarify for me.

Do I need an NCT for the car before 03/06/09??

    No. you do not.

Having said that, you will be able to book the car in several mths prior to due date. I've always done this, as there is always a chance that a fault ( dreaded emissions for example ) could rear its ugly head over the course of the few months in question

They must have made some recent improvements because I had to do this for several customers. I had it out with the NCT head office that they should be sharing a database with the tax office/vehicle licencing authority and not be making people run around with more form filling and bullsh*t because the left arm of the state didn't know what the right arm was at!

Until recently, this was a manual job that had to be done by the vehicle owner because the NCT keep the forms down in their outlets for this purpose...

This has now changed, when I rang the NCT to book in my (imported) 172 they had everything already on their system.

No need for cert (Which replaces log book) for NCT but you should have received it by now. Ring Shannon

My cousin brought in a car lats January, I brought mine in in April. He got notification for NCT at some stage but I didnt (up to July anyway) I was in getting my dads car NCT'd in July and brought my VLC to get registered. The woman at teh counter just photocopied the cert and that was that. It was on the system the next day.

I brought a car in from the UK in 2000 & again in 2005, both were automatically on the NCT system. I got notification of test AFAIK for both. Worst case I just rang up & booked it over the phone, it's been a while now.
