    Single Door Trap @ €44
    Double Door @ €56

I have 12 of these traps and I can say there are excellent quaility. Even managed to drive over one and bend it back into workable shape :D

What exactly do live capture rat traps have to do with sport shooting?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,096 ✭✭✭bunny shooter

As it's in the hunting forum it could be a rat problem around a pheasant rearing/release pen?

Rats are drawn to these as there is free food readily available.

Many people shoot rats too, great craic, should try it ;)

Terriermen have been known to hunt 'em too

Ivan, are you collecting 'em for some type of "driven" shoot by any chance :)

In the good old days jobs were scarce, whatever it took to make a few bob, the chances are this is a case of hard times on the way back. The
price of ammo may explain capturing vermin alive.

In the folktale, a colorfully-dressed stranger arrives in the vermin-infested town of Hamelin, Germany, and for a promised fee lures the town's rats away by playing a tune on his pipe. When the town refuses to pay the stranger for his services, however, the man lures the town's children away, too.
"Almost every version of the Pied Piper story ends with a paragraph saying the people of Hamelin remembered the day when they lost their children, and that they counted the years after the event.

    Thanks Bunny!

I have secured some top class grounds for shooting on, in return i have offered to place traps for mink and rats.
One property is situated along a valley that has two rivers flowing in it for a few miles- Hopefully its going to be great for mink:D and as it as close nit community i hope to get in with other land owners
    10min to front door;)

The land owner has seen mink and we both assume that these mink are the reason that there are no rabbits as theres plenty of old warrens.

The other property is an equestrian center and i am allowed shoot there out of hours as long as i am discreet and quite..
In return i will set traps once or twice per fortnight to keep there rat problem under control.. 5mins to door.

    Back to Traps
FFS another Irish price. €56 for a double door is too expensive.. for a bit of mesh thats flat packed in china!! I only value them at €30 max for new..

Grand. What's that got to do with sport shooting?
There's Farming&Forestry, Green Issues, Regional forums for every region in the country, Home&Garden, Nature&BirdWatching, and a fair few other forums this would be better suited to.

would the rats in dublin be a fatter rougher looking rat than we see in the country and do they go about in gangs .
they say in a city your never more than a meter from a rat .
would think it would be a right business to be in ,are you going into business ivan.
when your at you could hop off the magpies there .there is very few song birds in the city now a days .

    ivan,
i actually saw live catch traps in B&Q a couple of months back for around 25-30 euros ,
why do you want to catch them alive anyhow??
would you not be better of using fenn traps,
    ian

Vermin Hunter- what size would are those traps.
and what style of trigger do they have? Is it an overhead toggle to a spring loaded door? Size roughly at 8"(width)x4"(height)x14"(length)
OR is it he sliding trap door style..
VH I only ask as i have sourced the overhead toggle style traps for €20 (new) in Kilkenny town. BTW I'm starting to think that a tip up north might be very productive. Also in general note this; Hunting and shooting stores seem to charge exorbitant prices for these rudimentary traps, often i have had the best of deals out of your regular hardware store..

    Regards ITH

JSshooter- Magpie predation-is this as well know a fact as the fact that you're never more than 5 yards away from a rat by people in the city.

Believe it or not most people are happier to see these animals caught alive and then removed for humane destruction as opposed to a vicious fenn mk4/6 or a bodygriper Magnum 110 or the bog standard toothed rat traps.

Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look in B&Q..

Are fenn traps legal? Bit indiscriminate as to what they "catch"?

At least in a live catch cage if you catch a protected species you can release it

This is the "Hunting" forum. This kind of topic is relevant in a "Hunting" forum.

Now if it was in the "Target" forum I could understand your repeated questioning of the subject matters suitability

Don't confuse "well know fact" with "common misconception"

FFS i be cheeper to reinvent the wheel but thanks for the help.

anyway while i had their page open i thought i provide a link http://www.galliel.com/fieldsports-page43070.html
