iPod Compilations Woes

    How do people?

I'm sure every single person on here has this same problem so I'm hoping someone has come across a solution..

I have a few compilations in my iTunes library. I select all tracks in the album, right click, choose Get Info, go to Options and I tick the box for 'Part of a compilation'. Click OK. This setting ensures that when you snyc your iPod with your library that you avoid the creation of individual artist folders for compilations.

That's great. But it's far from perfect. The only way I can access the compilation album is by going through Albums on my iPod menu. What I would prefer to do is to have the compilation album somehow listed under the artists menu.

So my question is - "Can you setup your iPod so that you can place a compilation album under Artists rather Album"

What I do is select the whole Album and give the artist a singular name, like "best compilation 1989" or whatever your album is actually called, so the album name becomes the artist.

For example, on many classicla/opera album compilations I have, the main artist might be Placido Domingo, but the concert on the album has a choir, an orchestra and other soloists throughout and iTunes names each artist on each track depending on who sings on that track. So then I'll have 5 Placido Domingo "artists" on my iPod, so I just make them all Placido and know that the Album is whatever.

Works out fine, unless there is info you really want, in which case, move the info in to another field.

    Sounds promising.

Does that not disrupt the display of the real artists name when a track is playing though? So instead of 'Bob Dylan' appearing as the artist name something like 'Greatest Acoustic Songs Ever' appears alongside the title of the track?

that hasn't been a problem for me so far, but you could mess around with naming the tracks based on Album, Album Artist (same name), the Artist. I reckon you can sort it out alright with some messing around.

    Smart Playlists FTW!

I make Smart Playlists of each album I rip to iTunes.
Then name the Playlists to suit my needs.
I often merge 2 or 3 disc complilations into one Smart Playlist for convenience. For my fave artists I group all their tracks into a single Smart Playlist.
Also use normal playlists for custom complations of my own choosing.
Then I sync selected playlists to the iPod.

You need to make sure your tracks are properly tagged for this to work effectively (time-consuming when you have 8000+ songs in your libray!).
