I'm doing a fitness course and when I finnish I would really like to join the army, just for discipline and training (looks really good for people hiring a personal trainer). I looked at the irish army website and the links but i cant really work out whats going on. Am i able to join the army for only a year?

No minimum 5 year contract, there is no recruitment ATM anyway.

When you join you sign a 5 year contract. you can buy yourself out at anytime.

The DF has a freeze in place at the moment so no recruiting til we're out of this recession.

    Now there is some info.

I'd like some info on your plan though. You'd seriously do someone out of a place in the DF just so you could put 1 year service on your CV and tell all your potential customers you are Army trained?

There are personal trainers out there who have Army qualifications and have done Physical Training Instructors Courses through the DF and left after 21-31 years service and started their own PT ventures, and a lot of them would definitely not take kindly to someone claiming to be Army trained coming out of the woodwork.

Or you could make sure you have an honours degree, apply for a cadetship, be awarded one, complete 15 months training then resign your commission and off you go, easy really*

    *sarcasm.

put that yolk in brackets coz its secondary, its more for personal discipline and all, wouldn't be claiming to be big army man. Can see how that looks though. 5 years is too long for me though. thanks for the replies

I think they are still running cadetships, although im guessing thats not what you are after.

The TA in Britain would be your best bet, as our reserves are a joke.

Actually could join as a Doctor or a Dentist for a year (I'm guessing that's probably a long shot)

The British Army used to have what were called GAP year commissions for potential officer cadets, but that scheme has been withdrawn.
