Firmware version 2.60 will be available to download from January 21!

A new Photo Gallery application will let you group photos in various ways including by date and time, by event or by the number of people in the photos – you can even create a playlist that groups expressions (e.g. smiles) or age categories, like adults and children. You can also create a playlist of selected photos and select a photo frame for the playlist, which can also be played with your own music tracks.

We've added the ability to play DivX 3.11 encoded video files, and you can now take a look at the PlayStation Store before you register for a new PlayStation Network Account.

    HOME UPDATE
A little advance warning that Home will be offline for a little work this Thursday from 8am UK.
When it comes back you'll have a new toy to play with, the Far Cry 2 space from Ubisoft.

The Red Bull Air Race will get a leaderboard in the coming weeks and we'll update you on when that will arrive when we know.

    All taken from playstation fourms

Seen a video of it and the photo thing looks good but what we really need is in-game music and voice messages and an overall better online service. C'mon Sony, just give us the stuff we need...

But, where's the EU uncharted space? And the socom space?

And home needs an mgs space. Maybe even a mk II minigams were you have to zap enemies to score points, or you're a Mk II. Stuck in a maze and you have to get out.

    All above ideas (C) giggsy664 of boards.ie 2009

We have in-game music, kinda. Games have to support it but most games coming out now seem to have the option of having a custom soundtrack. I use it mostly for Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Burnout: Paradise and Motorstorm 2.

Last year we had in-game XMB (July was it?) and Trophies so I'm sure we'll see one or two big updates this year that will improve the PSN even further. Don't know if voice messages are really a feature that a lot of people want though - I'm sure most of us get enough random messages as it is!

don't really think much of this add-on:( It doesn't allow you to add photos from the media server

Yes they do, not every game supports custom soundtracks. The devs have to put it in.

The only thing I want is NTFS support so I can copy over .mkv files bigger than 4gb. :(

What GP was saying is it is not a Sony issue, the individual developers HAVE to include it if it is to work.

Ah you just use mkvob to extract the m2ts file which the ps3 supports.
Takes about 10 mins on a 4gb image.

An update to support MKV files would be great though, save having to convert at all!

didn't like the way you couldn't go online until you did the update, thats stupid as a previous update bricked some PS3's, so needed to go online to play COD WAW :(

But if they put in more bubble machines, it would be at least 480 gazillion times betterer.

If all this update is doing is the photo enhancer and divx3 support, why the hell is it 140mb??

I'm sure there are tweaks & tricks going in there too. To have divx3 support Sony have to assume developers will use it, so they need to ensure there'll be enough memory allocated to the game to run divx3. Also, photo manipulation even on a small scale is a hog at the best of times, so you have to account for that too on a system-level.

I noticed (maybe artificially) that the in-game XMB is a bit smoother... that could be in there too.

    Thanks for the reply!

One last question, why introduce divx3 support which is pretty dated on a high definition machine but ignore mkv playback??

Judging by projectmayhem's post, DivX 3 may be for game developers, perhaps for ingame video sequences.

As for MKV, hopefully they'll introduce it. Would there be licencing issues with regards MKV compatibility?

Why do these tiny updates take so long to download and install when the 360 can do it in less than 3 mins :/

360 OS takes 32MB flash memory (actually is 256MB now after NXE) compared to 128MB of PS3 flash memory.
360 OS updates are cumalitive whereas PS3 updates are all-in-one, any FW can update any revision of previous FW.
