Hi I wish to start cycling for fitness and for triathlon. I already own a hybrid I use for commuting but want a bike for triathlons & weekend road biking. I have looked at many web sites for advice and the number of products is overwhelming.
I will spend anything between €500-€1500: My Questions are should I:
    1) Go new or second hand, 2) Buy Internet or shop, 3) Go carbon or aluminum frame

I started triathlon last year and bought a pretty decent alloy frame second hander for around the €500 mark. It cost a lot more new but was a few years old.

My reason was that I was just starting out I would have to spend money on other triathlon gear. If I didn't like it (or turned out to be really bad) I wouldn't be too upset.

A year since I bought it - (if i had a few grand) I would go for a fancy carbon bike for races - and keep the old bike for training.

As regards where - you could buy on-line but you could end up with a bike that is the wrong size. Another alternative is to go for a shop in the north or the UK since the Euro is so strong sat the moment. Also shops are selling off their 08 stock - so there may be bargains to be had north and south.

As for carbon Vs Metal frames I can't comment - perhaps someone with more bikes will comment.

    My advice,

Go to Wheelworx in Clondalkin, tell them the budget (my mate spent 800 on the bike) and ask them for a half decent bike for racing and road biking.

If I was you buy a standard Giant bike (loads of choices) and add tri bars next year.

Get cycling shoes and spent a bit of time with them....dont want to fall off (not good).

Don't forget to haggle a bit...I bought a Giant bike last year, and there was €200 difference between NI and IRL. With exchange rate, there must be an even greater difference at the moment.
I mentioned that to the guy in the shop. He knew exactly what i was talking about, so we met half way and he through in few bits and pieces.

I dropped by cycleways last week. They had a superb Specialized TT bike in the window down to €2.2k from €3.3k...If i could i would:)
