So does indie have more of an image that goes with it than any other genre that has come before it

I dont understand what you are saying. There is indie music and there is alternative and independant music, and then there is an indie 'style' or image'. All are different.

Indie music these days is defined as any band with a guitar that record companies are trying to sell quickly. The label indie is as effective as any well organised advertising campaign

Alternative and indie music is a genre of music comprised of bands and musicians that are deemed 'alternative to the mainstream' <---KoL fans, take note, and or are independant of a label or on an indie label, for example Out on a limb.

The indie style/fashion, is something that has possible emerged from the music scene but has now taken up a life of its own, and is generally seen as skinny/drainpipe jeans, tight fitting t-shirts/jumpers and people who shop in topman.

In comparison to other music based images, i dont think it is any more prominent than say emo or goth or metalhead type styles. But for the most part those styles seem to be more connected with the music rather than general fashion,at least in my opinion.

Is that what you are asking?

well yeh thats pretty much what i was asking see u made a good point there about alot of other genres having their owne style but idie isnt really connected to the music its self like the others and that why i was so curious about the indie image, like where did it come from. like goth or emo, thats easy, the lyrics and music is dark so they dress in black, grunge is about rebelling so u dress like u dont give a sh1t. but indie style just kinda came outa nowhere rite....

Indie style is ironic, just like the music. Nobody actually likes Broken Social Scene.

    Elaborate. Sorry. :o

I wouldn't say it's the only genre with an image at all. This is a stupid thread.

lurrrvs2sp00ge, I would ask you not to use textspeak - it is forbidden on many forums throughout this website, including this forum. Please see the following link, from the charter, in relation to textspeak:

    Thank you.

You're forgetting metal and punk dude...
oh and lately emo and all that -core crap stuff...

Okay, i read a bit more of the thread.

I wouldn't say indie came out of nowhere. Indie was all about being independent and came out from the followers of the scene trying to become individual (pretty much like any other scene out there).

Metal look came from kids trying to act tough and grown up. Wayy too many metal bands to state influcence but you can name Slayer and Megadeath to popularise the look.
Punk look came from kids getting rebellious and violent. And the skateboarding/surfing scene giving rise to a modern, softer version of punk. Could mention Sex Pistols and Ramones to popularise the look. Though the modern look is more from the skateboarding scene (vans, hoodies and all).
Indie look came from kids trying to look "individual", unlike others around them (listening to bands no one has herd of, wearing different style of clothes). You could mention pixies to popularise the look.

Every genre seems to have its "look and lifestyle", indie doesn't seem to be any different...

But to make a last note, indie does seem to be the most fashion conscious subcuture as it seems to have the most elaborate fashion.
Like metal heads will be happy with anything black and leather, punks nowdays will be happy with any hoodie and vans shoes. While indie people have a lot of fashion thing going on...
Though there's also the new "scene" er, scene! which seems to be quite a lot fashion conscious too... especially with what they like to do to their hair...

well see the point is we know where those images came from based on their style of genre, but indie is different

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

^indie came from the indie genre too with a lot of contribution from the pixies... nothing that different.
Its just indie kids are more fashion conscious than others and so the indie look evolved faster than any other subculture around and now it has become an elaborate fashion of its own.

great so your bassicly saying yes to my origional question that it has MORE of a connected fashion than alot of other genres even though they all have their owne

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

    guess so...
Yes, indie people do seem to be more fashion conscious than the other subcultures.
Though there's the new emerging "scene" scene which might give you guys a run for your fashion money! But i seriously doubt it'll last longer than when the kids grow up and realise how ridiculous they look!
I quite like the indie fashion though until its not overdone...

Mr. Frost, no need for that. I've already pointed the OP to the charter post about textspeak and writing clearly. Bear in mind also that some Boards.ie users are dyslexic.

Discuss and chat away guys, without getting personal. Thanks. :)

    So so true.

"That girls an indie Cindy, Lego haircut and pokadot dress, I dont care if see thinks she's indie, How's shes different is any ones guess."

    Great tune.
