    Hi

Can anyone suggest a good, reliable, inexpensive email provider ?

All I want is email, nothing else.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    +1

I'm a definite Gmail convert; cannot imagine using anything else now.

Use gmail but recently bought Apple mobileMe which is great if you have an iPhone etc.

Gmail. Really really good. Works a charm as a IMAP on my Mac and iPhone.

Well, spam filters are not by any means foolproof and whereas I'd rather not have spam I DO want to view my spam because it frequently happens that legitimate mails enquiring about my business end up in the spam folder. So if I have a spam free mail box I might unwittingly lose business.

So for this reason, strange as it might seem, I do want/need spam

Email as a service is a business for Google. Its not for O2. Which do you think is going to do it better? You can even use a personal email address (domain name) eg flynnboy@flynnshouse.ie for free with Google.

Spam in Gmail gets put in a spam folder (or tagged as spam to be more specific)...you can look at it just fine, and choose how long it stays in your mailbox before it gets deleted. You can't get a better spam filter for free.

Buy your own personal domain from GoDaddy.com and add their email service, works brilliant, great anti spam features, great webmail interface and so on and cheap as chips, actually probably cheaper given the cost of things these days :)

O2 is awful. Trust me, I used to work with it.

GMail is the way of the future.

Gmail on your own domain is honestly the only way I'd ever dream of doing it.
Tech side of it, if using a client then IMAP/Pop3 but always leave messages on the server, space is there for a reason.

Didn't know you could do this. How is it done? Sounds like something I could use for our primary school.

I'd say it could definitely work.

It's done via Google Apps. There's a free and a paid type, and there's one for educational institutions too, though I don't know how hard it is to get that.

    http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/edu/index.html

You buy the domain name form your favourite registrar, register a Google Apps account, then point the domains MX records with the registrar to Google's mailservers.

Google have some pretty good documentation on how to set it up. Its not too tricky, I did it just to see how hard it was a couple of weeks ago. If you do play around with it and want any further info give me a shout.

You can buy the domain from google and it's all set up for you immediately.. it cost €5 .. redirecting the website for the domain is also easy because they give you DNS change control.

You and all your students will be emailing from the new domain in minutes .. simply select 'I want to buy a domain name' here http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new

I'll look into this. We already have a domain so I'll be tranferring the MX records if I go down this road. If it can be integrated into Joomla like the calendar is that'll be sweet.

I've spent the last day or so looking into gmail and I cannot see any way you can alter the @gmail.com address ? I have taken out a trial account and ascertained you can take out several alternate usernames and use them from the one account but whatever username you decide upon always has to end with @gmail.com as far as I can tell so far? I have tried adding addresses ending @.ie as you suggested but they are always rejected, which seems to make sense to me.

Am I missing something, or being thick ?

Yep.... settings > accounts > add address

Then you can add any username you want, provided you have already claimed it by opening another separate account in that username, but it will always end @gmail.com. As I said this does make sense, doesn't it ? For example if I use flynnboy@donegal.ie how is it going to be routed to gmail.com and find my relevant gmail account

"You can even use a personal email address (domain name) eg flynnboy@flynnshouse.ie for free with Google."

You can't do that through the regular @gmail.com account as was suggested
But even if you look at buying a domain there is no .ie option. as far as I can see.

They give you email (which is free) .. not the thing after the @ sign ( thats called a domain) and you have to pay for that.

    flynnshouse.com or flynnshouse.org etc = €5
flynnshouse.ie = at least €25 and you have to register elsewhere and get the MX records pointed at google

Yes, exactly, this is my point:

"You can even use a personal email address (domain name) eg flynnboy@flynnshouse.ie for free with Google."

This is not the case, that's all I'm saying. I appreciate the advice given, it just turned out to be not the case. However, I do thank the person giving that info' because it did lead my to investigate gmail and it does seem very interesting, but it is only with an @gmail.com address.

From the link given above http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new
"you will be able to create user accounts for john@example.com"
    70974.png

So it is the case. You have to pay for a domain name - even if you use google to register it. If you have a domain name already you just need to transfer the MX record which is free.

hehe - just noticed what's in my Google Search - Go on - I dare you - apply Rule 34 to that image! :p

Yes it's not completely free if you don't have a domain already.

If you do own a domain it is completely free to use their servers to send email*

Small misunderstanding here...as has been pointed out by other people, what I'm saying is that they will provide hosted email for your domain for free. Its pretty much impossible to get free hosted email anywhere else. I'm not saying that you get a domain for free. Sorry if that mislead you.
You buy the domain name form your favourite registrar, register a Google Apps account, then point the domains MX records with the registrar to Google's mailservers
GoDaddy, who are the registrar which Google use for purchases of domains at sign-up time, are not a .ie reseller.

Hey it really isn't a problem and there is no need for apologies. These things are difficult comprehend at the best of times and it is easy to misunderstand. It took me nearly the whole day to sus out exactly how gmail worked and I still don't think I know the half of it:D

I started this thread to find out a decent email provider and I think gmail is it.... so thank you all for the advice and the leads. I am currently with btinternet.com and they are continually screwing up, I am seriously thinking of going with gmail after I've looked into it a littler more, it does look good.

    Thanks again :)

Another good option with gmail is that it has a pop3 downloader, so if you have another account that supports pop3 you can automatically download all emails from that account into your gmail account.

You can then configure gmail to send from that account, so you're using that other account from the gmail interface.

This is good if you have a second account you don't use much as it means you only have to check your gmail to get those mails.

I think it does checks for mails on the other account about once an hour.
