Ok I know this is a strange post.... so apologies in advance. Basically, I am very prone to getting cold sores & have never gotten thru a ski trip without one regardless of using lip salve with spf in it. & when I say I get a cold sore I mean I get the mother of all cold sores where my whole bottom lip is one giant blister & I cant eat & am in a lot of pain & usually end up on oral anti-virals. Nasty really!!!

Does anyone know of a total block you can get? Or recommend any good lip blocks??? I'm heading skiing on the 1st of Feb & really want to try & get thru one ski trip without one!!

    Thanks in advance.

I use either a Neutrogena one with SPF 15 or a Chapstick one with high SPF that I can't recall and they really do the trick. Forgot them one bluebird day and was in agony for a few days afterwards. As for the cold sores and stuff I dunno, I just get burned if not careful!

Yeah its the likes of the Neutrogena with SPF 15 that i've tried but despite constantly putting it on i still seem to get them! Bloody sun!!! :( Thats why i was looking for something with a higher SPF or a total block if possible! Might try pick up something in resort!

For surfing I use a zinc sun cream that is a 100% sun block if applied correctly. Protects my skin from the bounce back rays of the sun off the water. I'd say your best bet is a lip balm with this in it if possible, I know you see criket players with it on!

They should have it in snow and rock in dundrum. They have it on the website here: http://www.snowandrock.com/Activity/Snowboard/Accessories/Skin+Care/Aloe+Up/Zinc+And+Aloe+Bloc+ALO0005.htm

I always find blistex is pretty good for making it better, although I sometimes use it as a preventative too.

I think i'm immune to blistex, zovirax & all those topical creams at this stage to be honest... It just seems that each breakout gets worse & worse! I've been getting them for years so i'm well sussed to when they're starting (that undeniable tingling sensation) so i would usually start applying cream from the get go! But like i said the last 6 or 7 times i've ended up in the doc having to get a prescription for anti-virals they've been so bad. The doc was so shocked the last time he even took pics they were that nasty!! I have even gone to the extent of taking the anti-virals as a preventive measure & they do tend to minimize the effects. I'm going to do that too but want to get a good block too just to be sure... the less exposure to the sun the better i suppose!!!

Best of luck and hope that cream helps. Let us know if it works!

I think there is some natural supplement you can take too that helps not get coldsores, some health food shop might know the name. One of my friends swears on it but I can't remember the name!

Yeah Lysine is meant to help prevent them! I took it for about a year but didnt make any difference! Picked up some of that zinc & aloe lip block in Snow & Rock during the week so i'm gonna give that a go & fingers crossed it will help. Will let u know how i get on! :D Thanks again!

Got thru my first ever ski trip without a cold sore!!!! YAY!!! :D:D:D I bought some of that aloe & zinc lip block that was recommended in Snow & Rock & it worked a treat. It wasnt expensive at all definitely, no more than €5. It painted my lips a very smurf-esque blue colour for the week but I couldnt have cared less... it worked a charm. Would definitely recommend it!!!

Thanks again everyone for all your suggestions. Sorry I did mean to get back sooner.

I wish!!! If I had my way I'd be skiing for the whole season but unfortunately work & money dont allow that!!

Would love to try & get another week in before the end of the season & give the lip block another outing but not looking likely!!
