Rates increase for businesses approved.

Glad to see our beloved council of money grabbing self serving oafs (with a few exceptions) approve a rates increase for the Counties Businesses.
A rate increase of half a percent was agreed upon at Monday’s marathon estimates meeting of Roscommon County Council, despite a call from local Chambers of Commerce for no rate increase, given the difficult financial outlook for local businesses.

Immediately after the meeting a political ‘blame game’ began. Cllr. Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan said Fine Gael have proved that they are “no better than Fianna Fáil when it comes to swilling at the trough while others are left with nothing.” Some Fianna Fail councillors were happy to point the finger of blame at Mayor of Roscommon, Cllr. Michael McGreal, on whose casting vote the rates rise was sanctioned. The People was unable to contact Cllr. McGreal on Wednesday evening.

At the outset of the meeting, County Manager Mr. John Tiernan informed members that a revised budget estimate for 2009 would require a rate increase of 0.66 percent.

Fine Gael councillors proposed cutting councillors’ expenses in order to bring the proposed rate increase from 0.66 percent to 0.5 percent. Fianna Fáil councillors proposed having no rate increase, by cutting conference fees by €1,650 per councillor and cutting the Chairman’s allowance by €11,000.

The matter went to a vote, but the voted ended tied after Independent councillor Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan – who is part of the Fine Gael-led majority – voted against the Fine Gael proposal and Mayor Michael McGreal was forced to use his casting vote in favour of the Fine Gael proposal for a half a percent rate increase.

An indication of reaction from the business community came when Chairman of Church Street Traders and a Fianna Fáil local election candidate, Larry Brennan, this week criticised the decision of Roscommon County Council to go ahead with a rates increase of 0.5 percent this year.
