UPC or Blueface?

    Hi all

I wonder if you can give me your opinions

The setup now is UPC Modem (10mb package) -> Linksys SPA 2100 -> DECT phones 4.

We still have Eircom line but most of the charges we get are for line rental so will be handy to move to another provider to bring that down.

Now we are using blueface for calls but I do notice some sound delays or echo.

I wonder if anyone using UPC phone service can give me their feedback on the service and quality of calls, also how the service is while downloading, youtube, etc.

What do you all think if I stay with Blueface and upgrade the ATA could it make a difference to the call quality? Or should I go with UPC if the call quality will be better.

    Thanks

UPC will have better call quality. It is more expensive. I have many times considered moving my phone to UPC for the quality but then I remember UPC are c*ts

I would recommend Blueface. Well not just Blueface but any third party provider. I have UPC 20Mb with Blueface and don't notice any quality issues.

The main reason that I don't recommend UPC is that if you want to change your ISP at a later stage, it's going to be a hassle transferring your calls over. You'll have to sort out the phone transfer and re config your ATA.

If you use a third party VoIP provider, you don't have that hassle. At the most, reboot your ATA.

I'm a very happy, long time, Blueface provider but have changed my ISP many times in that period. Never had a problem.

I also have used Blueface for several years. Any quality issues have been down to the ISP. If your connection suffers high latency or high packet loss then the call quality will deteriorate. If you are going to be regularly downloading large amounts then a router with a QOS facility which gives priority to VOIP traffic would be useful.

The UPC phone service runs independently of your UPC broadband connection. Your broadband and your VoIP ATA within the cablemodem get assigned different IP addresses, and are on different subnets to regular broadband packets. UPC also give the call packets priority within their network by QoS, to the call packets. I can be hammering the max out of my 20Mb connection and be on the phone and not notice any hiccups whatsoever. Downloading doesn't affect being on the phone, nor does being on the phone affect download speeds. Call quality on UPC is excellent, no noticeable difference between it and an eircom landline. You do end up paying for it though as call charges are on par with eircom, and so way more than blueface!

I find Blueface does tend to be echoy and choppy at times, I use an SPA-2102 ATA and then a Linksys router flashed with Tomato for QoS and even then, you do notice it if someone starts downloading or uploading heavily on the broadband connection.
