    hey all
i heard that there was a s/w available for the mac, that would work in the background, work from startup and track the location of the laptop at all time.
if the laptop was then stolen, the laptop wood stil be monitored, without the new wner even knowing that this s/w is tracking the macbooks whereebout all the time.
    anyone ever here of this.
afaik this software isspecific to macs, but i kood be wrong.
    any ideas?
    thanks
    ed

That sounds a lot like Undercover:

I have used Undercover on a number of company laptops and it works very well.

We had three stolen and in two cases i have pics of the new owners, their IP addresses and various other information got from screenshots.

However, when i contacted the police, i got nowhere. They did not seem to know what to do with the information.

At the end of the day all i could do was have the laptop bricked remotely.

That's pretty disappointing... I always figured though that this type of software would probably be useful in the US/Canada but you wouldn't get anywhere with the info over here...

It's only a "simulated" bricking though isn't it? If the thief has a modicum of brain power, wiping the machine and reinstalling everything would bring it back to a working state, right?

a mobileme account (.mac) and backtomymac works in a similar way. There's a famous story of a girl taking a pic and the location of her stolen laptop reported to police immediately and they apprehended the culprit and returned her macbook.

Check it out, on all 10.5 macs.

Yeh, i think so. However it pretends to be a hardware error and recomends returning it to Apple i think.
