For starters i am relatively new to Linux but have found Ubuntu to be great. I would like to experiment with different distros. If i were to change over to Fedora what changes should i expect? They both use Gnome and im assuming most of the packages are the same? So what are the real differences between the packages and are there any reasons i should/should not change over?

    Hi Tom,

After about 10 years of using distros I now always use Fedora - only because it has evolved from RedHat and I was familiar with that.

I think once you are using the same window manager i.e. Gnome / KDE then most changes will be with system admin type stuff .... e.g. if your wireless card is giving trouble and NetworkManager isn't helping then the script that controls the device will likely be in a different location than it was in Ubuntu. Also, some apps that work on one distro may not be built / working for another. You might have to manually compile some stuff, check any critical apps before you move.

Your package manager will also be different, Fedora makes heavy use of Yum (out of the box), Ubuntu uses apt-get I think.

And where you go looking for support will change too!!

They look quite similar, in terms of appearance. Fedora 10 is getting good reviews. I had a look at it in Virtualbox, and it looks quite impressive.

The big difference I think would be that Ubuntu is a Debian based distro (it uses .deb packages) and Fedora is a Red Hat based distro (it uses .rpm based packages).

There would be some differences in using the command line to do things.

I would suggest having a look at it in Virtualbox before you install it on the bare metal. You can find Virtualbox in Add/Remove in Ubuntu.

Played around with Fedora 10 and found it to be a big improvement. Used to using Red Hat so I guess I just find things more familier.

I've installed Fedora a few times years ago, but now use Ubuntu. Just my 2 cents; Fedora is polished and slick looking, I prefer the way it looks and feels. It has a more professional feel than Ubuntu. But its not quite as easy to use for the beginner as Ubuntu.

P.S. When I first discovered Linux, I found it difficult to get objective and concise information on the differences between the various Linux distributions. While it's perfectly understandable that long time Linux users will have loyalty and preferences for one particular distribution over another, that doesn't help the newbie make an informed decision. I found the following web page at Distrowatch to be the nearest thing to an objective and reasonably accurate summary of the pros and cons of the major distributions. This kind of concise factual information about Linux distributions, is rare on the internet, I suggest bookmarking it immediately!!
