Unemployment Allowance - Community Welfare Officer while waiting

    Hi,
I signed on for Unemployment Allowance last week, I had a means test and have to wait 6-8 weeks.
But I was told by both the inspector and the person at the desk that I can go to my community welfare officer in the mean time?

Does anyone know what the situation with this is? Does the officer give you the amount of money deamed by the means test? Or does she just give you what she deems fit? Do you have to bring any documentation, or anything with you, when going to the officer? I had never heard about people going to the community welfare officer to collect while waiting to be approved.

If you have an issue with cashflow, the CWO is able to advance you some of the money you will be eligible for once the paperwork etc is done.

IMHO not worth doing unless you're totally broke - far less hassle to use your savings in the meantime.

And for the rest of us who simply don't have enough/any savings?

I went to my CWO as my Social Welfare payment was to take 6 - 8 weeks, then another 6 - 8 weeks (it actually ended up being 12 weeks) and she arranged for me to recieve the full amount. It was even backdated from the day I put in my Social Welfare claim.

When the Social Welfare payment was processed there was no hassle either - except for the fact that they changed the Post Office that I was to collect it from and I was very worried to find it not there one week! Luckily I discovered the change of Post Office before the three days were up so I didn't miss a week.

Anyone who doesn't know what a few basic TLA's mean (ok, so that one has 4 letters, but you get the general idea) has no business being on boards.ie

And if you don't know, then try here
