who did you get your j1 with?

did they not sign you up with that taxback internet crowd?

iv had at least 3 calls from them offering to sort it out for me but i dont have any to claim back they dont seem to understand that

yeah they should have called you by now to do it for you, go to www.taxback.com and register there and someone will call you. it takes a good while to get sorted but it seems worth it, i'm getting $440 back (the company take a percentage of this but i'll still see the guts of €200 hopefully).

What I want to know (and I really hope somebody here can help me!) is do you legally have to file a tax return? I dont have any forms (like final payslip) that I would need to do it. I also didnt register my job because I only worked it a few weeks so I was finished before I remembered so that might complicate things.

you don't have a hope if you never registered the job, that's why they stress that you do it so much

i dont think you have to unless you are self employed which i technically was but i think you have more chance of being audited if you dont.

im a little nervous about not filing returns this year as i want to go back on an internship for 9 months but i reckon it will be ok

What do you mean by dont have a hope? If you mean I dont have a hop in getting any money back I dont care I didnt earn enough to pay tax anyway. If you mean Iv no hope getting into the country again then thats a problem!!!

no, just of getting tax back, there's no other implications, sorry to worry you!!! The only reason a student on a J1 needs to file a tax return is to get money back. Unless you're earning some ridiculous amount you're not going to owe them anything and in all likelihood they'll owe you something so they're more than happy for you to let it lie!
