Just wondering if i bought some BOI shares now - what would happen them if the bank is nationalised? Do they become worthless or just stay listed on the stock market?

Well Northern Rock investors got nothing

Anglo Irish investors really ought to get nothing but time will tell

The likelyhood is that your shares would be worthless

and i imagine if one more person asks this question a few of the regular posters here may well subcumb to nervous breakdown

I think they are pretty much worthless, sometimes some compensation (much less than the share price) is given to shareholders in this situation.

They could be worth less than nothing if the shares are suspended indefinitely - they'll just hang around occupying your time.

likely theyd be suspended like Anglo on Friday and stay that way. Essentially they would be worthless. Govt compo would give you some marginal return .. maybe 1 cent or so.

better off putting your money on a nag in the 2:15 at doncaster tomorrow.

I think this is a far different queston than the nationalisation of Anglo - just about every member of every pension scheme in the country probably has a stake in BOI or AIB. The implications would be enormous.
