    Hi,

I have Ubuntu installed on a dell inspiron. When i boot the OS up and login the volume is really loud.

When i press mute on the laptop, the volume icon appears but sounds still play. Also, the volume icon in the top right is present with the mute icon even when it's not muted.

All the sound preferences are on auto detect, except for Sound Capture.

Anyone any ideas why this might be happening ?

    Thanks

    Try....
    Going to the Terminal
    alsamixer

    adjust the volume level
    sudo alsactl store

    to save default volume levels
When i press mute on the laptop, the volume icon appears but sounds still play
Do you mean a mute key on your laptop?

Try googling your inspiron model number to get multimedia keys working.
