Copying files on Vista distorts sound

I had a quick google but I can't find anything specifically related to this issue.

If I'm watching a video and then try to copy a file, the whole laptop basically starts shuddering as if I've asked it to compute the meaning of life. The mouse goes jumpy but more importantly the sound of whatever I'm watching starts to stall and I have to pause it until I'm finished copying the file.

I saw something about disabling something vista uses for reliability when copying using the command line (can't remember what the command was) but I get an error saying the requested action requires elevation. This is a work laptop and I have admin rights but some things such as elevation are blocked so I can't do that.

Does anyone know of another way to stop vista taking all the system resources when it copies a file?

I also had an issue where it kept telling me it cannot locate the resource specified when copying large files. I can get around both of these issues by using the dos command xcopy /Z but it's not a permanent solution. FFS they had copying working properly in the 80's, why the hell did they have to mess with it

edit:this was the command that was suggested that i can't run:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

i'd actually just not read that article properly. i'd assumed that i was running the command prompt as an admin since i was logged in as an admin but apparently not. i just ran it as admin and managed to run the command but......it didn't have any effect :D

Also, i had the error that i was getting with large files wrong. its:

Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service

I was gonna say SP1 fixed the file transfer thingy but it's yer work laptop and they prolly dont have sp1 yet do they? ;)

will tweakUAC allow you to elevate without the prompt?

I can try later if you'd like Sam and see if it works.

that's actually not a problem anymore as you can see in the post above yours that you prob hadn't read before posting this. i managed to get around that but it didn't solve the problem
