Drinks and popcorn in the cinema have ALWAYS been expensive.

    Nothing new about that OP.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 827 ✭✭✭thebaldsoprano

Yeah, true. Still, 7 - 8 euro I could understand 11.70 is just taking the *something*.

OP do you have an unlimited card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 296 ✭✭BeansMeansHynes

Eh I hope you didnt pay for it??

Nothing worse than people paying for stuff and then complaining about it after. Its common knowledge that Cinemas charge a fortune for popcorn, drinks and the like.

A lot of people go into Tescos or somewhere before hand and get popcorn and drinks for a fraction of the price.

If they didn't charge this price for popcorn / coke, then the ticket price would be much higher.

Its the way cinemas work financially worldwide.

Movies @ Swords have started putting a coloured sticker on the drinks/sweets they sell and they check the stuff you bring into the cinema now to make sure you bought it from them.

Must be quite alarming with them putting on their rubber gloves and then searching for smuggled popcorn.

People who buy snacks in the cinema are mugs who deserve to be fleeced. Get popcorn and drinks in spar for 1/4 the price.

Popcorn and drinks are actually what cinemas make the most money from.

Pfft, Spar? Try Tesco or Lidl/Aldi and get stuff for 1/8 of the price!

I wouldn't give tesco my business and most cinema's don't have tesco/aldi/lidl beside them :P

Well you could keep an emergency stash of popcorn in the boot of your car just in case you end up going to the cinema :pac:

How do you expect them to stay in business? I don't eat very much in the cinema as I'm going to see a movie but from time to time I don't mind paying more for something, especially if I'm in the mood for it as that is how they make money and stay in business. It's certainly not from ticket sales.

They'd stay in business if they priced their tickets and snacks more competitively. Nearly 10 euro to go to the cinema in Dublin now...that is a major rip off.

    Maybe you're a cheapskate :p

    Seriously though...

... I buy it because it's part of the experience in going to the cinema, always has been for me. That and I can afford it. I don't care, I know it's too much but I'm willing to pay it for the whole experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

I can afford it, I just don't enjoy the multiplex "experience" which is more about snacks and talking through the movies than enjoying film.

Luckily I have 2 independent cinemas close to my flat, and the only time I have to brave a multiplex is when I get free tickets for screenings in VUE or the Odeon from seefilmfirst :D

I only go to cinema because of the Unlimited card for 20quid a month and i hardly buy any food/drink in there because of cost and value for money.
If they took that unlimited card away, say bye bye to many customers as the car park itself is expensive as it is.

Since the dawn of time, food has been expensive in the cinemas and millions of people still pay for it. I have never bought cinema food - way too expensive so I'd always bring my own.

As previous posters have said, the reason food is expensive is because that's where the cinemas make their money as they don't make money off tickets.

It's not just an Irish phenomenon, cinema tickets and food are expensive everywhere.

You can park on Dominic St. for free after 6 or 7pm, I think.

As for the OP, meh. Drinks and popcorn bought in a cinema are always going to be more expensive than if bought in a shop. There are bigger overheads, and it's a different experience. Do you complain that the local restaurant charges more than Tesco for your salad?

I'd much rather a big bucket of warm, salty popcorn than a little bag of Manhattan Popcorn, and ditto for the soft drinks. As others have said, it is part of the cinema experience, and I don't think twice about paying it.

I can understand with pubs/restaurants that its part of their license that they are allowed prevent you consuming 'sourced outside' products, I don't see why a cinema would be allowed you prevent you bringing it in.

I really would love someone to produce the definitive legal answer to whether cinemas can stop you bringing your own stuff in or not.

I imagine they can possibly get away with it under health and safety reasons or something to do with the cost of cleaning up mess. After all, if you are paying a tenner for popcorn, I suppose they could claim that the cost of cleaning it off the floor is factored into that, while it's not if you bring your own stuff.

Galway Omniplex all above within 2 min walk of each other

UCI have always allowed people to bring in their own food, just not hot food chipper/BK's ect. because the smell permeates the whole screen. But unless the rules have changed it was always ok to bring your own sweets/drinks/popcorn in with you.
so i doubt its a legal thing.
plus if you bring a bag with that closes they have no right to ask you to open it or look in so how they gonna know?

For Dublin cinemas at least, most of them have a lot of shops selling cheap food nearby
    • UGC - Tesco/Lidl/Aldi/Dunnes
    • Savoy - the same Tesco/Lidl/Aldi as above aren't that far away
    • UCI Coolock - Lidl
    • UCI Blanchardstown - Lidl/Dunnes
    • UCI Tallaght - been awhile since I've been in the Square, but if I recall there's at least a Tesco's in there
    • Movies @ Swords - Dunnes / Superquinn
    • Movies @ Dundrum - Tesco
    • IMC Dun Laoghaire - Tesco
This is just from the top of my head - there are undoubtedly other shops/cinemas that I hadn't thought of...

UGC can be a little expensive but I love that they sell coffee. I usually goto Eddie Rockets before the moooovie and then have a coffee while watching the moooovie.

The cinemas are private property. They can decide what is and what isn't allowed on their premises.

They cannot make you buy stuff from the concession stand but they can prevent you from bringing stuff in from outside if they want.

Most cinemas do not enforce these rights, but they could if they wanted to.

I'd never pay those scandolous prices in the cinema on parnell street, i just go down to the spar down the road and get the same stuff for a fraction of the price
