Can anyone tell me is it possible to put wood just on the outer sides of a concrete stairs and carpet up the middle??? Would love to achieve this look without paying to get the entire stairs covered in wood and then cover it up with a carpet up the middle!!!

Sure you could, but you would be better off putting a cheaper timber under the carpet as well to slow down wear and tear and give prevent odd junctions where the carpet meets the timber..
