On the verge of joining Castleknock with my brother and a couple of friends....

3k per year all inclusive...sounds a little expensive but we will play at least twice a week and 3-4 during summer.

Silly question I know but anyone think it'e a bad idea.

Never been a member anywhere, just wondering what are the benefits,pro's-cons etc.

What about next year...is it the same or does that 3k include a joining fee? Which Castleknock course is it....the one up in the castleknock country club, or the public one down near dunsink?

If you're going to play as much as that and can afford it, yes go for it. Cracking course by all accounts and you already have a fourball/mates to play with, so fire on.

For anyone who's going to play that much golf, joining a club is a good idea. Benefits are you'll be able to get a handicap, play in club competitions, be part of a club atmosphere and have a place to call home.

I take it you have played the course before? I'd make that a must do if you haven't already. Joining a course blind is a bit of a lottery, as after a few rounds you might decide you hate the place.

Funny enough we have played it at least 30 times since aug...yeah I know a waste of money when we could have joined then. 10 mins from where we all live so we'll well get value.

absolutely lovely course. a few of my friends are members,
i really dont play enough to justify paying that much.

great idea and a good deal, my friends joined last september for 3k and that is membership till the end of this year.

good initiative by Castleknock to respond to the downturn.

Super course. I've played it about 10 times myself (playing again this Thursday!!), it's about 10 mins from my house. 3K is a great deal, if you play more than once a week. Definately the best drainage in the area, and the greens are probably the best in Dublin. I would definately go for it.

    My thoughts exactly....

    Cheers.

Really nice course, if you don't have to pay a joining fee on top of that then it sounds like good value especially if you live so near to it. As has been said already - the greens are really excellent.

If you can afford it then go for it!

Try and all join at the same time and see if you can negotiate a further discount... 4 of ye at €3k each is a big cheque to write and if they can't offer discount maybe try and get some green fee vouchers as extras?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,791 ✭✭✭JJJJNR

is that 3k for the year.. you would want a good bit behind the bar for 3k... sounds expensive for a years golf. Unless you play every single day.

Really nice course though, one of my favs.

Yeah you should most definitely be able to negotiate if there are four of you joining, I reckon you shouldn't have to pay any more than €10k for the lot of you, possibly even less if you're lucky/a good negotiator.

Yeah, considering there is no joining fee the €3k per annum is not a bad price but remember after ten years you will have put in at least €30k, not taking inflation/levies etc. into account.
In the long term it works out pretty expensive, then again it's a beautiful course and as long as it's maintained at its current high standard (i.e. they keep money coming in) then I reckon go for it.

Happy golfing, we await our invitations :D

A friend of mine was trying to talk me into the portmarnock links for 1 800 and its a links course.

I think joining fees will drop dramatically over the next 2 years.

    Keep us informed

(not yet) Have you joined Castleknock yet? I would love to join but I don’t have the cash at the moment. I am going to try and join next year if the price is still around the same or a little cheaper!

Do you know how many members they have and if you have joined it would you recommend it to others? I enjoy the course but would love to know what the membership are like, are they stuffy, snobby?

Yeah...Joined 2 weeks ago, cannot recommend it enough, one thing I've noticed from other course's this time of year is staff always working on the course(which has to be good) comps are well run, nice atmosphere around the place, Greens recently sanded and pole forked but starting to come good. The deal we got was 1,500 up front and 1,500 in 26 weekly payments. I think there are 200 members.....

Really happy with this place and hope to be there for many years.

That’s a great deal (not yet) only having to pay half up front is great in these times of credit crunch. It’s good to see you are welcomed, I have heard of some clubs where older members for some reason unknown to me frown on new members. If all goes well I will join up next year. I’m going to try and play a few games there over the summer, hope you don’t mind us pay as you play golfers using your course!

Must say Castleknock is a lovely course. Just came back from the place and the more I play it the more it grows on me. Really pleasant track, with some lovely par 3’s, dangerous mind particularly that 11th when the flag is right on the corner of the green! The greens are quick but very true and a good mix of long par fours, ones that come to mind 4th, 13th & 17th with a good mix of shorter scoring ones 1st, 5th, 13th.

Still I feel the 3k a year membership is still a little inflated in the current economy climate, however if you make use of it I supposes it’s worth it, considering the quality of the course. I wonder will they drop the prices for next year?

Yesterday they did a deal of €25 a round all day and during the summer they are doing open days for €30 a round. By the time you play a few open days and avail of the cheaper green fees you can really get quality golf for a fraction of the price.

Look forward to playing it again...

Completely agree with you jimbo. There's a huge billboard at the entrance saying something like best greens in Ireland which I thought was a bit much but they are not far wrong. The par3s are fantastic imo and I loved the 90degree dogleg par5(6th). Although shorter, I found it more challengeing than Luttrelstown next door.

it is a lovely track, and they've let the rough mature a fair bit! Hard going once you're in there.

It is the closest course to me. 15 minutes door to door.
but for €3k. No. Not with the choice of courses available at a 1/3rd of that price.
