I'm going in April :) I'll be taking both film and digital. I want to try to get a taste of classic new york - you know, the Woddy Allen/Ira Gershwin one. Any ideas on where to go would be greatly appreciated :)

stay out of Manhattan - Brooklyn and Queens are much more interesting for everyday New York-ness.

I''m also going in April Sinead. I'm only bringing the DSLR, I was planning on shooting up around Harlem, and Greenwich village, I may just venture to Queens and Brooklyn. anyone else have any suggestions

Lower east side is great for photo ops. Its near Little Italy and Soho, all in easy reach, you can see a lot of the skyscrappers in the sky from here too.
There's an old world deli (I think its Katz) but the whole area around it is real New York. Loads of activity during the day in the small parks nearby.

If it a clear day Staten Island Ferry, down around St.Marks (East Village I think) has some great photo ops - people and colourful shops..... and of course nearly every street on Manhatten for buildings.

I love the Bronx Zoo. Spent a whole day there the last time I was in NY.

I'm spending 4 days there minus one day for shopping, I was thinking of only shooting early morning and late evening but that's subject to change.

ive been planning my own trip there in March.

If you go to googlemaps.com it has a really handy way of finding specific places. it has this cool feature where you drag this yellow man on to the street you want to view and it gives you a real time photo of the street.

its handy for my cause i want to find specific shops like so:

Yup it's a tourist trap but the Rockafella centre for sunset is savage; great view of the skyline empire state building etc

Is there a charge to get to the top ? can you ise a tripod ?

As far as I remember there's a charge alright, can't for the life of me remember how much. I didn't have a tripod with me but I'd reckon it'd be grand. I was there in Feb last year and feck me it was cold at the top (and only slightly warmer at the bottom!), we spent ages in the gift shop trying to warm up waiting for the sun to go down.

    Brooklyn Bridge

View of Mantattan from beside River Cafe in Brooklyn
(and afterwards have a pizza in Grimaldis Pizzeria (yet to make it there but they are meant to be great))

    Central Park

    Street Scenes in general

I think the rooftop bars open in May so you wont get to see them and enjoy the drink and the views (for photos)

Some NYC photos here if of interest

I did have a moment of panic about that Trish, but I'm there the week after. Phew!!! Not that I'll have any money to buy anything, mind..

Got a hotel room up by Harlem end of Central park for 100 yoyos a night, so I'll be about there a lot I think.. When are you going?

Oh and forgot to add (DUH!!!) Thanks everyone!!! I'm taking notes as I go here :)
