    Hi there

My mum is sick and spends alot of time in bed. We have had alot of windy weather and live in the country and am worried incase we get an extended powercut as have had alot of windy weather lately.

I am looking for a blanket that can keep my mum warm until the power is restored. Something like those tin foil blanket that emergency servics use or a battery powered blanket.

I understand this is an unusual request but my mother can not get cold for any period of time as she is very light and prone to infection.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated in locating this.

    Thanks
    Noel

Sorry to hear about your mum. It must be tough and it really sounds like you are doing your best to take amazing care of her. Just remember to look after yourself also.

In relation to the blanket I don't know where you can get what you are looking for. Your GP or the hospital might be able to recommend something. Or perhaps if you know anyone in the Order of Malta or the likes they may be able to get one for you as they provide medical assistance at outdoor events if needed.

You may be able to track one own thru outdoor/adventure/sailing stores, granted they will have standard emergency foil blankets but will probably have ones for more extreme incidents and hey should provide assistance to your mum with keeping her body heat in. Good luck

Get a couple of those chemical gel handwarmer packs. They are reusable and don't get hot enough to be a danger. Pick them up in any camping or fishing shop.

    Here's how they work.

I remember seeing a poster somewhere telling you that if you have an ill person in the house and are dependent on electricity for equipment for them you should notify the ESB of your situation and they will make your house/area is a priority any time the electricity is out.

If you have a gas hob for heating water when ESB is off you could consider the old reliable hot water bottles.

Necessary precautions to be taken to avoid burns etc.

You could also buy a heater that works from a cannister of gas. Remember them "Super-ser" ones that everyone had back in the eighties?

    Like one of these:

Usually they're portable so you can wheel them into whatever room you want.

Also I bought one of the emergency tin-foil blankets in an outdoor/camping shop a few months back. I'm not sure how useful it is though - I didn't need to use it in the end so it's still in it's package. It was about €5 so I'm not sure how great it could be.
