Getting fired for having an operation

Hi all, My Girl-friend has been working in a pharmacy for around 2 years. She is having an operation in april and will be out of work for the full month. Her manager/owner is letting her go because of this. Note: there is no union, Is this legal? What steps can we take to ensure that she keeps her job? Thanks in advance.

Go to a solicitor and get some advice, there is also legal aid available if money is tight.
