Canon Pixma 'phantom' paper feed error

I purchased a Canon Pixma about 10months ago now.

    It's the MP160 model - it was around 100Euro (combined scanner/copier/printer).

All of a sudden last Thursday it developed an error condition, Error #3
which is a paper feed problem. I googled and found that this is quite common
with this range of Pixma inkjets and despite trying various things (eg, putting
in an A4 sheet of card and lightly forcing it through the feed mechanism .. to clear the error) it didn't clear the error.

Anyone else experience this "blinking E3 of death" on a Pixma ?
I am a bit cheesed off. I know it is a relatively cheap printer but this
is a bummer. According to various support forums there's quite a lot
of others who have buyers remorse having seen their printers die the
    same way.
