Chlorine Smell After Swimming Pool.

Anybody who uses a swimming pool will be familiar with the smell of chlorine which follows you around for hours afterwards. Showering doesn't seem to remove it but can a spell in a steam room or sauna help to wash it out of your skin?

I've never tried it but it may. Don't worry if you swim enough you start not to notice it. :)

After a swim in the pool I can get very itchy(mostly on my back) despite having very thorough shower. Is ther any way to prevent it?

My big advice on this would be to make sure you use a good body lotion after you shower. Moisturising your skin will get rid of all the dryness caused by the pool and this is what causes the itching. I'm training a lot in the pool at the moment (3-4 hours a day most days) and I'm also slightly allergic to chlorine and this is the only thing that works for me-on the days that I don't have time to put on body lotion I end up tearing itchy.

Going back to the original question-this can also get rid of the chlorine smell. I'm using Sanctuary Body Lotion at the moment and it totally gets rid of it...I don't notice the difference because I'm immune to it anyway but people have stopped commenting that I smell like a swimming pool!!

Hope ya don't mind me posting in your thread Green Hornet....

.....whats the best way to protect your hair from getting wrecked by chlorine? should i put a leave in conditioner in my hair before i go to the pool?

    Thanky!

I just use body gel to get rid of the chlorine smell. A silicone swimming cap would kept keep chlorinated water out of your hair and a good moisturising shampoo should help repair damage.

Am I the only one who quite likes the Chlorine smell?

Body lotion or baby oil will help with the dryness.

For hair, if you pre-wet your hair with non-chlorinated water and use a cap, it shouldn't suffer much damage. I'm not a fan of pubbing conditioner in as I think it tastes the water which is not pleasant for anyone else.

I guess the showergels and lotions help to mask the smell but does the sauna manage to sweat some of it out of the pores?

wouldnt have thought the pores would hold much. Mostly the smell comes from the surface of the skin. you could try visiting a different pool. The busier pools (or maybe badly regulated) tend to use to more chlorine then the less busy. you might find other pools are less chloriny

Please don't as it leaves a disgusting smell/taste in the water for those in the same lane as you.

take some of the other advice in this thread
    -pre-wet
    -wear a tight (silicon) cap
    -swim in open water
if the above fail, try another sport.

    I like the smell too..
But has the regular absorption of chlorinated water (through mouth/nose or skin) any impact on health?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

I've not heard of any science that I would believe but you will often see it hinted at in the press in the context of respiratory problems. From a personal perspective, some of the pool lifeguards and swim coaches/teachers I know always seem to be coming down with chest infections but like I said, I've never seen any convincing science to back this up and I do like my science.

There have been times when I've found it more difficult to breathe during and immediately after swimming. And everyone had the same problem so it wasn't just me. Long term I'm not sure but no one I know of has ever developed problems.

My problems usually start within a couple of hours of the pool.

Sneezing, heavy head, gritty eyes etc.

New goggles seem to have helped the gritty eyes.

I always wake in the middle of the night with completely blocked nose.

It's usually fine the next day again though.

I love it, especially after a good swim/sauna/and shower i can still smell a little bit of it, gives me a "fresh" feeling, squeaky clean as they say:D

Aren't some pools chlorine free, using some other disinfectant. I expect some compound might neutralise the chlorine, and that some shampoos & lotions might have this in them. I know regular sodium hypochlorite (bleach) degrades in heat, not sure of the exact stuff they use in pools.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

some pools use Ozone to help with the disinfection. Not sure it completely negates the need for Chlorine but certainly reduces it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,625 ✭✭✭AngryHippie

Ozone is normally used as an alternative to chlorine for disinfection, but some pools use it to combat crypto and other water borne nasties, In those cases its only used once or twice a year when the pool is shock loaded with the stuff for a day, and then its back to hth business as usual. If its the eyes that are irritated it is usually not the free chlorine level, but the level of chloride (spent reacted chlorine) and the pH that is irritating them. I'm in oz at the minute and in most of the pools over here I've used its quite comfortable to swim without goggles at all, which is probabaly down to TDS and pH. Chlorine levels in my current pool are about twice what they were back home, the pH hovers between 7.6 and 8.1 and still no sting.... But then again it is a 50m outdoor pool, with very few children in attendance, which reduces the chlorine demand significantly.

I was in Wheelworxs buying Triathlon gear and the sales guy happened to say that they do a range of shower gels etc that are designed to wash out the Chlorine smell. I have no links to the store and don't no an more details about these products but I sure if you give the store a call they will be happy to help.

Glad there's some other people out there like me. I've gotten to the stage where I don't notice it when I enter the pool and it's only if I'm with non-swimmers that they'll comment on how strong the chlorine smell in the air is.

When I was younger in school and swimming full time, we used to have a double PE first thing after a morning session. I used to reek of chlorine once I started to sweat. Convinced the stuff was leaching out of my pores.

Also I actually remember getting on a school bus once and someone saying "does anybody else smell swimming pool?". I had to put my hand up to that one.

Old Thread I know but I was looking for an answer to the same question and came across these links

Apparently there is a product that you can spray on (scroll down to the paragraph on how to stop smelling like chlorine):

Buts here's an interesting review of the product with a tip on how to make your own

Just try some soap but the best thing to do would be to put on some moisturizer.Moisturizer helps me the most, and it completely gets rid of the chlorine smell wherever you put it.Plus your skin won't be dry!
