Does anyone know if the DSM IV is used in the UK and is it used in Ireland? If not, is there an alternative manual/set of guidelines used for diagnosis of clinical depression? Do psychologists and psychiatrists use the same guidelines?

    Thank you :)

One of our lecturers gave us that resource for diagnosing clinical depression.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition

He cited this paper for it BMJ 2002;325:149-152 ( 20 July ), you need to be registered to read the full text here http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/325/7356/149

The alternative is ICD-10, which is the WHO classification of all conditions - section F is the bit referring conditions which come under Psychiatry.

    Voila!

ICD-10 is the one most commonly used in the UK and Ireland.
DSM-IV has a more American bias though it is often used in research.
They are similar although DSM historically tends to diagnose more schizophrenia in conditions that may be diagnosed as bipolar in ICD
    Both are constantly evolving BTW.
