You're looking at spending over £700 on a set? Nearly €800...

I honestly don't think this is the correct way of going about it, as you say you know nowt about the clubs. Some of those clubs may not suit you, if you're willing to pay as much as the above then I wouldn't go on reputations of them clubs alone.

Go to a golf shop try out the models you have listed, try a few others, then make your decision. Also, imo I don't think them irons would be up to much. Why not try get a second hand set of quality clubs? Have a look on adverts, and your local golf shop. You can get a better set, as you improve I don't think you'll want to keep the irons you have listed. I could be totally wrong, but just my opinion!

105 for someone playing a few times a year is great!

I'm relatively new to the game as well so don't know enough to advise you on specific clubs. My feeling is that you'd be better off buying a second hand set of irons for the money you've mentioned. I think you're making a wise decision on keeping your budget fairly low for the time being and seeing if the golf bug really sets in. I think I made a bit of a mistake getting myself a new set of irons for around €350 too early on in my golfing 'career' (this time last year); I really had no idea what I was looking for and thought one set is pretty much the same as another. It's only now that I'm starting to appreciate the differences between clubs - so maybe get that bit more experience before making a big financial committment.

In the spirit of keeping the costs down I would recommend ditching the driver and 5 wood and getting a set of irons from 4-sw (seems to be the standard these days) and replacing the 3 iron with a hybrid/utility club - meant to be easier to hit than a 3 iron.

As a newbie, like myself, practice your putting and short game more than anything else; it'll reduce your scoring much more than the driving and long irons.

Perfect!! Well said. This is what you want to go by.Being a caddy I find that alot of the "beginners" tend to be comfortable w/ 5 iron down.3wd and a couple of long iron hybrids are perfect for you.If you want, you could go get a cheap driver just so you can practice on the range.I definately wouldnt bring it to the course until you get that down pat(waaaay too much walking your going to subject yourself to).I'm not sure that tri ball is legal any more either.Could be wrong.

What i would really like you to remember:
    -"Drive for show,putt for dough"
It's not how far you hit it , it's how straight you hit it.Like arg said, short game is HUGE (80% of the game). What you lack in distance can easily be made up 100 yrds and in as well as putting.PUTTING PUTTING PUTTING!!It's important to have your tee shots accurate, your putting is where you SCORE AND SAVE.

**DONT EVER GET CAUGHT UP IN YOUR OPPONENTS GAME OR THEIR OPINIONS ON HOW FAR YOU SHOULD HIT IT.STAY WITHIN YOURSELF UNTIL YOU GET BETTER.NO 1 NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT YOU HIT THAT 150 YARD SHOT W/, JUST PLAY WHAT YOU HAVE TO AND GET IT DONE.BELEIVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU I'VE BEATEN MANY A FOE THAT HAD ME BY 2 CLUBS SOMETIMES MORE ON EVERY SHOT.YOU'LL GET BETTER IF YOU PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.....I PROMISE!!!

Cory Pavin didnt win a PGA Championship by being a long hitter.

    Hope this helps bud.

    Stay cool/Play well,

    Jonathan
