First Beard Project

I decided over just before Christmas to try and grow a beard. It's been about 3.5 weeks so far, decent growth for the most parts, but not as dark or heavy on chin or upper lip. I've been called "Grizzly Adams" more than once in the last week.

At what point should one consider first trim? The sticky said 4-5 weeks? Do people trim themselves or goto a barber shop? Can anyone recommend a barber shop on Dublin south-side for beard trim?

    Cheers.

I've found that its best to do the trimming yourself. At least that way you can get it the way you want to.

Buy a good comb and a small scissors for this. I got mine in Tesco's for pretty cheap and both of them are made in England. Good quality too! :)

Just take your time while doing it otherwise you might mess it up if you rush. Also, if you plan on shaving the "neckline" make sure that you don't shave it too high or you'll look like an eejit when you move your jaw. :p

You can see more information on shaping the neckline here.

Cheers Dord. I think doing it yourself is probably the best shout, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I gave the beard a trim with my hair clippers since, cut length 9mm and also tidied up the neckline. I kept it quite low as a first cut, looking alot tidier now I must say. Will probably refine the shape over time.

Found it difficult to trim the moustache with hair clippers, simple reason being the blade is protrudes out so much, the nose gets in the way! Looking at possibly getting a proper beard trimmer, I saw one or two posts on this one, seems to be ok.

Think I'll need to invest in a comb and scissors regardless. Cheers again.

What you should do with the moustache is comb it downwards so then you can trim whatever hangs over (if you want) with a scissors. I find its easier in general to trim it with a scissors.

As for the trimmer, I have that exact one for the last year. It's still going well. :)
