Just a few quick questions to help me on my way

Is Car insurance expensive over there?
What price would be the average for a pint?
What are the best spots for nights out to socialise(im a 19 year old male)?
Is the public transport system efficient in sydney?
Where would be the cheaper areas to rent within reasonable distance from the CBD?
Is the cost of living much cheaper than here?

    Cheers!

A pint of local is 2.70 euros odd :) Tooheys Extra Dry probably being the nicest beer available on tap (there is also VB and Carlton, which are OK, and Tooheys New, which is horrible muck). A bottle of Heineken (which is pretty much the only commonly available foreign beer) is 4 euro generally. Dbl vodka and coke in a nightclub is 7 to 7.50 :pac: Taxis are pretty much half the price as here, many clubs dont do cover charges and you even get a complimentary drink or two in some, especially if on a night out organised by your hostel (one place we went laid on litres of vodka and punch, about 12 jugs for maybe 18 people, fell out of the place and probably spent a tenner all night :) )

Best clubs I got to were the Kings Cross Hotel (its beside a large neon coke sign in Kings Cross) and the downstairs in Scruffy Murphys Irish pub, in th CBD. Both were playing alot of classic dance anytime I was in. The Gaff on Oxford St is good downstairs as well. Ive tonnes more to check out when I get back. Some massive rave spot called Home sounds good as well.

Rent and accomadation seemed to be the only thing the same general cost as back home (I was only on holiday, moving out next month). Apart from that, drinking, taxis, eating out, cheap as you like :) . Clothes are more expensive too apparently.

I'm looking to get a car soon and will be looking into this fairly rapid. I'll let ya know what the quotes are.

Cheapest I've seen is $5 (~EURO2.50) in porterhouse, Surry hills.

Fantastic nightlife in Sydney. Horses for courses type thing. You'll need to go to a few places to see what suits yourself.

It is excellent in relation to Ireland. Poor compared to other Aussie cities (Melbourne & Perth anyway)

If you're looking to keep away from Bondi I would suggest Inner West (Newtown, Petersham, Ashfield, Summer Hill). All on the train line within 15 mins of city centre.

As shane86 says, it is. Especially bit if you plan your spending.

 Scruffy's downstairs is like something out of a zombie movie! The smell of the place is enough of a put off.

    In the city
    Pints are rare, $5-$7

A schooner of beer (475ml) VB, Carlton $4.75-$5.90
    Premium Aussie $5.50-$6.50
    Import Draught $5.80-$6.80
    Stubbie (bottle) add $0.50 -$1.50

    In the suburbs

    Hotel/Pubs
    Schooner $3.70-$5 depending on establishment
    Stubbie $4.50
    Premium $5

Join a club RSL or Leagues club for cheap drink

    Schooner is $3.20
    Stubbie $4

NEVER EVER go to scruffy Murphys I would not send a dog in there

If you want to hang around with Irish people try going to PJ O Brien's (same faces every week)

Kings X is good for a night out now and again, but would not make a regular haunt.

Mercantile on a Sunday is really good.

Porterhouse is good but can be quiet.

Loads of bars around Darling Harbour that are good
    Cargo Bar
    Bunglo 8
    The Loft

    But all expensive.

Oxford street has plenty of bars/Hotel but they are very Gay

    Gaff is alright

Cock & Bull (Bondi Junc) really good on a thursday night just pity its in Bondi

Coogee Bay Hotel great on a Summer Sunday...... Just don't eat the Ice cream
    only1stevo wrote: »

    Yes/No

    Avoid the Bondi trap.

Eastern suburbs Bondi, Randwick and Coogee are all expensive

If you pay $750 for a 3 BR house in Bondi and is falling down (1950's) **** hole

For $470 -$500 you can get a 3 BR Townhouse in Croydon (2003)

There are big communities of Irish people living in Burwood, Croydon and Ashfield. These tend to be long term people who got work sponsored they maybe lived in the eastern suburbs (Bondi) and then then seen the light (I know cos I was one of them) and moved out to Burwood. 13 km from the city but you get twice the digs for 1/2 the price.

Newtown, Marrickville and Enfield are student areas, cheap but crap.

    Yes and No

I have been living in Sydney for the last 4 years and it is expensive but its worth it for the quality of life.
