Hey lads just want to know if Zavvi (old virgin megastore) closing down for good or whether it has been taken over by H.M.V. like some of the other Zavvi's in Ireland?

    Or possibly staying open?:o

It will close (my sister works there). It wasn't one of the shops taken over by HMV.

The extraneous facets of the entertainment industry are the first to fall. Its about to get a lot worse lads, trust me. We haven't even yet entered what will be a deep recession.

Actually I think it was the loss of their CD/DVD distributor, Woolworths, in the UK that did them in to a large degree. Shelves were empty in the UK for a long, long time during the pre-Christmas period which is when shops generally begin to break even for the year.

Eh no it's not... Zavvi were trading far better for the last 16 months then they were when they were Virgin. It was because the EUK/Woolworths went bust and they were they're main suppliers, they called in their debt, Zavvi couldnt pay it all and were unable to secure deals with other suppliers. When they were Virgin they also used EUK, so regardless of name, it would of happened either way.

what chain of store would in their right mind in this climate rent or buy those premises on Daunt Square - the place is huge!
i cant even think of a business that would use all the space.
Would HMV consider moving their current operation to a bigger store and leaving their current premises?

HMV have already taken a lease on the ground floor of the new Academy St shopping centre when its finished and its been in the pipeline for 4 years so the answer is they will NOT be moving into the ZAVVI premises.

ZAVVI have just got some more stock in from the branch that closed in Blanchardstown.

To those who do not want to download illegally, you dont have to, CDs are available 24/7 online. Personally I doubt I'll ever take to the downloads, prefer the audio quality from CD and the tactile nature of the sleeve notes etc, having "invisible" tracks on an MP3 player holds no appeal for me whatsoever.

I can see it lying empty for a long time, like the shop that used to be Reads bookshop.

And people you can still buy CD's or DVD's if you want them, HMV is only 2 minutes walk down the street:confused:

If only there were private torrent sites that had most albums in 320kbps and FLAC...

heard a dvd rental store opened there,
    anybody know about this?

Its called Directors cut, and it looks more like sales than rental.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 155 ✭✭roberta c

There selling used dvds, alot of old rental copies in there, some new ones too..

Yeah, it's Directors Cut - I work for their sister store... They're selling new and old DVD's CD's etc - They wont have your new releases for sale, like if Marley and Me is out on a Monday - they'll have it two weeks later at a fraction of what other places are sellin it for - there's no competing with HMV on that front!! LOL! I tried not to put too much of a sales pitch in there!

Directors Cut are a chain of stores that used to be known as Power Video (a rental chain), it's still Power Video in Glanmire I think... but they've shops in the Lough, Kinsale, Skibb and Kilarney too!
