    Hey Guys,

I am playing with the idea of getting back on the bike after a few years away..

I was on the irish cycling website but couldn't really find what I was looking for..

Basically I am wondering what are the average race times/distances for the various senior levels..

    Thanks Dan

a typical Senior 3 Sunday Afternoon race was running across 65km to 85km with a 38-40km per hour average speed. not sure about Senior 1 or 2 races, but if you're coming back from a few years off the bike, you'll be starting in the S3 group, so figures above apply.

not too sure what race speeds looked liked towards the end of the season, as i wasn't racing. but probably identical.

As outlined above, those are average speeds. They do not keep a steady pace. To get an average of 25mph you may be be hitting sections regularly bordering 30mph.

As above. I have seen good Triathlon riders who can average 42kph for an hour get dropped 10 minutes into even an S3 race. Average speed means little. Be able to ride hard up drags and hills and be able to go hard from the gun. Loads of interval training for you OP.

always get a good warm-up, holding wheels becomes easier when the hammer drops. i should have given an example earlier. i rode a christmas race there on the 21st... average speed was 37km/hr but the max speed was a face melting 62km/hr. while not an open race, its a good indicator towards the nature of racing.

Thanks for all the posts guys.

I had not realised that Senior 3 was that hard. It gives me something to aim for..

    Thanks Again

It's hard to find. Its not filed under calendar on the CI site, (likewise under road/off road/track or leisure).
Instead they have it under Cycling Ireland Resources

Any idea where I might find some useful/practical information of interval training on the net, am just back on the bike after the holidays and it would be something I would be interested in.
