Damm I was almost thinking of going to see my bloody valentine today, thinking the eye will have a 3D screen but just called them up there and no such luck.

I could be wrong but It seem's like the only places with a 3D screen are Lisburn and Cork based on the fact that they were the only places advertinging that U23D Tripe.

I havent bothered to ask any other places but I'm sure it's the same story.

I started some time ago a topic about IMAX and as I was told there's no IMAX in Ireland at all.

There was one in Dublin years ago but people seemed to be not interested in that kind of movies so they moved to Belfast, or something.

Sure the cinemas are half empty most of the time, they're hardly going to go with an idea like this.

Maybe people aren't interested because of the price. I have been to the IMAX in London and it was something like £45 for myself and the 2 kids. You still have to wear the 'Elton John' glasses though. Unless I'm mistaken, the only thing special about the IMAX cinema's is the size of the screens, they are massive! I always thought that 3D films can be shown in any cinema as long as you use the glasses as it is the film that makes it look 3D and not the screen. They were showing 3D films in the 50's and 60's so it can't be that difficult.

It's really a lot, I paid about €6 for the ticket in Warsaw and they can exist somehow, so I guess it's not that hard to decrease the prices.

As I know it's not much more in the US and Germany.

They use a completly different technology these days compared to the 50's and 60's . You need special projectors etc. for it to work. The glasses are'nt those red andgreen ones anymore either, they are clear

I could be mistaken now and it was a very long time ago, but does anyone remember two 3D films being broadcast on TV (one was a horror I think) in the early 80s. I remember it (that's if it happened at all ??) because I was only allowed to watch the non-horror one as I was a kid at the time. Everyone was buying the red and green glasses in advance of the screening. It may even have been RTE that aired it  There was a huge buzz about it at the time.
Did this actually take place or did I imagine it

Proper 3D films aren't done with the red/blue glasses, that's why you won't see any on tv.

I remember that. One of the films was on the den during the day. It was a western

Yeah, that's right and I think the horror was about witch burnings or something :)

The SGC cinema in Dungarven plays 3d films aswell and the prices are the same as the regular films €9 for an adult ticket. Heres a link to the technology they use. http://www.reald.com/index.php/page/13

Your dead right... The early film was The Three Stooges and it was called Spooks. It was in black and white and worked way better than the horror shown later on, the name of which I can't remember.
I just remember a lantern being thrown at the screen and beining amazed.
It was RTE's holloween line up. They hardly show a film of any sort now for halloween. Bring on The Mist!

Yep, it was done for Halloween, there were free glasses with the RTE Guide and there were extra free ones in the local shops. It was fecking brilliant. It must have been the late 80s though because I was allowed to watch all three films, the Stooges was the best one though because it had more stuff flying towards the screen. One of the horrors had only one bit where a circular saw was coming toward the screen.

I have been to a 3D IMAX in New York. We saw Beowulf, which is crap, but the 3D was class.

Bam! Yeah, remember that western one aswell. It was on at Halloween. I just remember rocks coming at me from the screen.

you still won't beat Nightmare on Elm St 6 with the 3D part!

Is this not the same thing but in the Omniplex?

I'm a fan of the Eye though over the Omniplex everytime..

the eye already does 3d flims. i've seen aliens v monsters and my bloody valintine in there with the big glasses on. or is digital 3d something different again? the prices were the same as usual for the film.

word of warning: if your vision is not 20-20 it's slightly 'off'

What are the glasses like in the omniplex? Are they expensive or something (I only ask because they have those security alarm things where they ask for your tickets) - I assumed it was the digital 3D glasses.

never thought i'd say this but yey for living in letterkenny again! we've had 3d for last few months, seen cololine, monsters v aliens and i think i seen something else, can't remember! It's an extra 2 quid though per show up here so that brings it to €10.50 at night and €7.50 during the day shows so still cheaper than the eye :p

What about the town hall theatre? Plays in 3-D! You could even wear the glasses if you want - make it more real!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 473 ✭✭toxick

Digital 3D is diffrent from the 3D IMAX has. The Eye has a digital 3D screen. its the confrence screen if im correct(Screen 5 right on the left when entering main lobby) You have to wear the glasses, which have the slits in them(but are very hard to see. glasses seem to be clear)

The omniplex is getting a Digital 3D projector soon, for the upcoming 3D movies not actualy getting a proper 3D in terms of IMAX ect.

I saw Coroline in 3D in The Eye cinema about a month ago? They gave you glasses (good sturdy ones) on the way in and collected them as you left. Was tempted to pocket them until i saw they had an embedded security chip!

So was this not "proper 3d"?

Went to the IMAX a few times when it was open in Dublin... it was ridiculously expensive and with a minimal selection of films, most of which didn't exceed 30minutes. More just demos of what it was capable of.... but the films just didn't come out quick enough. Bad timing I'd say.

Saw Monsters vs. Aliens a few weeks back in Letterkenny, wasn't that impressed to be honest with the 3-D. A few points near the start (ping-pong bat and ball) stood out but not much else.

Hopefully Avatar will set the benchmark for 3-D and mark the real beginning of something new. Cinemas are looking for a new 'hook' to get people away from their big flatscreens and home cinema set-ups. A lot is riding on James Cameron this time around.

Why pocket them when you cant use them outside of the cinema and they wont work with any home cinema setup??
