    Hi,
apologies if this has been asked before.

I have an 22gb m2ts file -movie with DTS sound.
I want to convert this to an approx 5gb mkv file with AC3 sound.

AC3 due to the hard drive player that is being used and 5gb - well space.
Player is a WD HD player - as on another thread here.

I have seen but not used Ripbot - will this do the trick, just need to understand the settings. What about Automkv ?
    any other ideas ?

    appreciated

    K

d/l handbrake and it doesn't support certain m2ts files.
    will look into it further.

can some-one explain what tsmuxer does exactly.

the size can stay the same for now - but really want to change the dts sound to ac3 --- mainly for the WD TV HD on another thread and so i don't have to put all dts movies thru my 5.1 sounds on my popcorn (a100)

    thx

just found this tool here to convert dts to ac3 for mkv files.

    http://www.networkedmediatank.com/showthread.php?tid=743

so, with mkv -smaller files - this would work fine.

question so - what utility is best at converting m2ts files to mkv - without doing anything to the audio.

have d'l so many tools not sure whats what - thanks

    appreciate the time to reply

I use XviD4PSP 5.0 to convert my m2ts files into mkv files. I have never needed to convert DTS to AC3 but I am pretty sure it can do it as it gives you great control and there is an audio option, I just never use it.

If you are using 5gb files would you be better off changing to 720p, rather than 1080p?

If I wanted a 1080p file I would set the file size to 8-9gb.

For the record I use tsmuxergui to create the m2ts file which contains only the video. I would then select the audio I want, and after creating the mkv file with XviD4PSP 5.0 I would merge the two files using Mkvmerge GUI.

I view my files using my Dvico Tvix M 5100SH and my Sanyo Z2000 Full HD projector. I am only doing this for a few weeks so the above is just my findings!!

    Best of luck!!

    fantastic Branners,

will have a look at that tomorrow.

the mkv's are all 720 anyways so thats not a problem.
I will check your program to see if it can encode DTS to AC3.
if not, I have another to convert them but it only works with mkv's.

there are so many progs out there, it gets confusing.

    thx again.

The m2ts file is more than likely 1080p, as far as I am know?? You can use MediaInfoRaw which will tell you. You will need to change the resolution to 1280x720(688) in the Resolution/Aspects settings in Xvid.

I went through so many progs including Ripbot but Xvid works brilliantly and is well worth getting to know!

It breaks apart the streams in a media file and allows you to create a new one. So you can extract just the audio and video streams you want, exclude subtitles etc. Additionally it allows you to make a TS file from an MKV file, which can allow some high spec encodes to play back correctly on an NMT or TViX.

I use it to extract extra audio streams allow for conversion of DTS to AC3.
