Girl I like is from slovakia. i thoughit it woul;d be cut to ask her out in slovakian because
    A Unusual
B No one nearby in her work place will know what i ask or if she says no

Basically I would like to say "would you like to go for a coffe sometime" Or "what time is your break" and then "would you like to go fo a coffee at you break time"? [there is a restuarant near her work]

Also the pronounciation e.g Ako sa mas is how are you but how do you pronounce it? is mas like mah or like mass, get what I mean? Thanks

I went out wit a foreign person for a few years and while I could say a few phrases and ask a few questions, if someone answered me I hadnt a clue what they were saying because they were talking so fast in their native language :)

If I was you, i'd ask her out in English!! At least you'll be able to understand the answer :)

You could text her in Slovakian as it might prevent any embarassment from understanding each others pronounciation face to face etc. :)

If you get a translation of a phrase to ask her out with make sure it's from someone you trust so you don't end up insulting her mother.

    +1

That could go horribly wrong if the question was posed to the wrong people.

Get it of the intarwebz and ask her how to pronounce it.

So I'm guessing she works somewhere you frequent quite a lot?

translate.google.com gives me this for "would you like to go out for dinner sometime?"

    si zájsť na večeru, niekedy

Your guess is as good as mine on the pronunciation but careful of the last word, could easily sound like something else :o

    Well done that man! :D:D

Best of luck OP, don't let the language hold you back.

I am going out with my Estonian girlfriend nearly 3 years. I occasionally try to learn the language but so far all I know how to say is "your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries":p

I am married to a foreign person, shes from Canada...lots of foreign people around these days... duh

ask her to translate something (ie- THE QUESTION) for you....

im sure she'd find it funny and attractive.....;)

    ....or cringeworthy.

I personally dont think asking her out in a gimmicky way will increase the chances of her saying yes.

I guess OP knows if its appropriate or not

each to their own but if a girl turns you down purely because she cant take a joke im sure the OP would be happy to have dodged a bullet.

    There's a pretty simple solution...

    *small talk*

"Are you working all day/night/insert timescale here?"

"Ah, ok, if you're not busy, fancy grabbing a coffee/beer/steak after?"

At least you'll get your answer in simple terms, and avoids any embarassment of not understanding a reply/anything that could go wrong with attempting a foreign language. At the end of the day, there's no dodging the bullet, you either go for a coffee with her or not, and at least you're being open about liking her.

I think what you want to do is super sweet but maybe do the asking in English and surprise her with some sweet Slovakian at a little point. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭Raekwon

Go for it OP! :D Nothing ventured nothing gained and all that.

In the short term this could work out very well for you if she agreed to meet up, *but beware because Czech/Slovak girls are extremely promiscuous & materialistic and haven't got a loyal bone in their bodies unfortunately :(

(*huge generalisation there, but I have lived in Prague & had a few long term relationships there and back home in Dublin with these girls so I'm speaking from experience).

No offence BOS but if i could speak it i would not have to ask here how to translate it!
