NTL won't bother to tell you that the Digital TV service which also includes Analog service is now cheaper than the Analog service but adds extra channels to your collection.

Cost saving: €58 per year once Digital box is paid for.

this I discovered from the helpful chaps in the ICDG cable/mmds sub-forum.

another thing is that its €25 to upgrade to digital, but free if you get pvr box, 5 months for free but then the pvr box costs €5 euro per month after that, another senseless ntl offer,

Canceled my NTL as of yesterday. :)

Got a Free-to-Air Satellite dish & box (€80) and have RTE on the terrestial aerial in great quality. Well over 70 channels, including BBC,ITV,C4, C5. FREE!!

A real bargain if you ask me.

Really no point in wasting money with NTL these days unless your into
    Pay-Per-View sport.

If I want to watch a match i'll go to the pub and use my NTL money for that.

Also NTL have the cheek to increase their fees by €3 per month for digital TV.

This is a silly move because as time goes on more and more people like me will cop on and switch to the Freesat.

I'm sure as time goes on Freesat will just keep getting better with more channels added to the line-up.

    RIP NTL...

Maplins and Power City have the Satellite kits all the time.

Some Lidl, B&Q shops may have them as well.

You'll need an indoor/outdoor aerial from there also for the RTE,TV3, and TG4.

They can be installed DIY or you can get an installer.

For the whole system expect to pay €200 inc labour.

And say goodbye to those annoying tv bills.

Try this satworld crowd. They know a lot and give advice you won't get from the girl in Lidls.

Wouldnt let NTL in the house again, not after the last time no matter what price.

    SAT all the way.

I got a flyer in the door for homevision and am trying their telly and broadband for free. The picture is great on my new flatscreen and the broadband is fast even now. It's all on my phone line so I'm not paying any bills to eircon or ntl.

My parents are paying just under 400 for analog, not sure of the exact figure. This thread is a bit of a kick in the teeth.

I get a week of programmes info on my telly, I think that's free too?

Apart from Sport and News, thers is very little new content being produced on non terrestrial TV. Channels like Paramount, Dave, GOLD etc all show archive material. Even terrestrial channels show more and more so called nostalgia TV such as top 100 list shows etc. Reality TV cannot be considered new content as it cheap to make and not intended for syndication nor later repeats.
So, TV these days is poor, the new content is thin. Therefore it make slittle sense to pay anyone for a TV service. You are effectively paying for stuff you already watched and little else.
My advice, go Free Satellite or Ebay

In fairness ,NTL is bringing dublin at least into par with the rest of europe with regards to decent broadband.
I think they deserve a chance to make the most of things for another couple of years.

This thread seems more suitable to cable and tv forum. Thanks to the OP for pointing out a lot of people are paying more for a lower quality service though.

I just have NTL basic analogue and yes looked at their website yesterday as thinking of getting another point put in upstairs and couldn't understand how analogue (which I'm on) is cheaper than digital.

Had a look at the Satworld crowd, would really love to get rid of NTL but not sure where to start, I am not very up on all of this - if I asked the Satword crowd to install and it cost say 200e does that mean I never have another bill? Also would I still need NTL to come out to set me up with the new tv point I want?

    Analogue is dearer then digital.
€24.95 verses €20 a month for the value package.

Deal works well if you've only got one tv. Adding multi room viewing really pushes up the price.

Edit: Is it possible to keep analogue only in your other rooms if you go digital without the multi-room charge? That would be a good saving then.

Analogue and digital come through the same cable

No sign of any kind of Discovery/Nat. Geographic channels though. Big drawback for me.

Still, for 80e you're still talking about a bargin. I got th Lidl sat package last September which I'm using as part of a Mythtv setup, works really well. The kit included a twin LNB so I can still use the decoder that came with it.

I've still got the basic NTL digital package too, I didn't want to have to run another cable into my kitchen (where I've got the Myth box) and I wanted to keep NTL until I had checked out the FTA channels. There are still some channels on NTL that I'd rather not loose, such as the above plus History, but it's a no brainer to get a FTA kit. And with NTL extending their broadband network I'm thinking of ditching BT for broadband...

    Slightly off-topic but hopefully useful.

There's no way around it if you want the sports.

If you have broadband you can get any sports event in for free if you know where to look. Google for more info.

So that just leaves the movies and Fair City. Film 4 are on FTA which just leaves Sky movies of which anyone will tell you theres only 1 good movie on a month. Lets say youre paying 400e a year for Sky, how many dvds of your own choice could you get from screenclick for that?

And can you get Fair City reruns on RTE.ie? Again, broadband needed.

My 2c. While this thread is probably better suited elsewhere a lot of people dont ever go clicking around on the more techy forums and are looking for ways to save money so I'd leave it here.
And with NTL extending their broadband network I'm thinking of ditching BT for broadband...
I live in an area where no NTL broadband (ashbourne), I rang them last week (Jan 09) to see what plans they have for extending (I've BT as well) and they were very firm on the stance that they had no plans to extend but were going to concentrate on the customers they do have and upgrading them. Where did you read they were extending?

That just isn't true, Sky show roughly the same number of new release movies every month as a video store has, just a few months later.

Also Sky show lots of good classic movies.

I'm not saying it is worth it, but it isn't as bad as you say, it is actually quiet good.

He meant extend BB capability into his area, as he already has UPC. UPC will probably extend into some new areas, mostly just new developments which are in the middle of UPC cabled areas.

Once the upgrade of the network is complete, they might then start to think about extending their network, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

While most of the news channels are on Freesat, most of the other channels you mention above aren't on Freesat, so it mightn't be for you.

My Ma is currently paying the following:
    €32 - Chorus Digital TV(Basic)
    €32 - 3mb Chorus Broadband
    €65 - Eircom Phone

I found out that new customers to Chorus(UPC) can get 10mb broadband, digital+ TV(Pause/record TV), All the movie channels, Multi room, and telephone for a total of €94. This is good enough for me, I'm saving 30 euro a month and getting way more bang for my buck.

So I got the mammy to cancel the chorus as we have it now and I'm then eligible to sign up as a new customer within the next 2 business days. I will be without it for about a week or so.

Might also get me one of them satellite yokes tho...
