    Hey all,

I’m looking to replace my current road bike (old 198? Peugeot) that has finally ground to a halt.
Anyway I’ve been looking around and spotted that Wheelworx are doing a pretty good deal on their Giant defies at the moment. I as looking at either the Defy 2.5 or 2.

    MODEL Defy 2.5 €663.99

    SIZES XS (43cm) S (46.5cm), M (50cm), ML (53.5cm), L (55.5cm) XL (58.5cm)
FRAME AluxX SL aluminium, Fluid Formed, Compact Road Design
FORK Advanced Composite Overdrive,11/4" - 11/8" aluminium steerer
    HANDLEBAR Giant Anatomic O.S.
    STEM Giant 3D forged
    SEAT POST Giant Aluminium
    SADDLE Giant Performance Road
    PEDALS Wellgo road
SHIFTERS Shimano Tiagra 27 speed STI
    FRONT MECH Shimano Tiagra
    REAR MECH Shimano Tiagra
    BRAKES Tektro R350 Dual pivot
    BRAKE LEVER Shimano Tiagra STI
    CASSETTE Shimano HG50 12-25
    CHAIN Shimano HG73
    CRANKS FSA Vero 30/39/50
    BOTTOM BRACKET FSA cartridge
    RIMS Alex DA22 700c
    HUBS Formula RB31/32
    SPOKES Stainless steel
    TYRES Kenda Kriterium L3R 700x25mm

    MODEL Defy 2 €759.99

    SIZES XS (43cm) S (46.5cm), M (50cm), ML (53.5cm), L (55.5cm) XL (58.5cm)
FRAME AluxX SL aluminium, Fluid Formed, Compact Road Design
FORK Advanced Composite Overdrive,11/4" - 11/8" aluminium steerer
    HANDLEBAR Giant Anatomic O.S.
    STEM Giant 3D forged
    SEAT POST Giant Advanced Composite
    SADDLE Giant Performance Road
    PEDALS Wellgo road
SHIFTERS Shimano Tiagra 18 speed STI
    FRONT MECH Shimano Tiagra
    REAR MECH Shimano Tiagra
    BRAKES Shimano Tiagra
    BRAKE LEVER Shimano Tiagra STI
    CASSETTE Shimano HG50 12-25
    CHAIN Shimano HG73
    CRANKS Shimano Tiagra 34/50
    BOTTOM BRACKET Shimano Hollowtech II
RIMS Mavic CXP 22 700c custom for Giant
    HUBS Giant custom
    SPOKES Sapim Race
    TYRES Kenda Kriterium L3R 700x25mm

Just wondering if the defy 2 is worth the extra €110, differences I can see are
Carbon seat post, Tiagra cranks, Hollowtech II bottom bracket, Mavic Rims, Giant hub, Sapim race spokes
Though the Defy 2.5 cranks seems to be a triple where as the 2 is only double.
Is a double better, or is there really a need for a triple.
I’ll mainly be using it for my commute from Sandyford to Ranelagh but I would hope to get up into the hills a bit too (when I’m not on my mountain bike).
Can any one recommend any other bikes around that price range. Had looked at the Beone storm 1.0 on CRC but they don’t have any 2008 ones left in my size( I’d be a medium or 50cm on the Giant) and the 2009 ones are a lot more expensive.
    Thanks

I would go with the Defy 2, of those 2 bikes, if I were you, and as regards hills, you will have no problem with the compact double 34/50 12-25 set up, thats what I use, and I am a big lad.they can be got here for @€;700 incl. delivery http://www.cyclestore.co.uk/rangeViewer.asp?categoryID=960. I bought my first Giant here

    +1

But it's interesting to hear of somebody abandoning a 1980's Peugeot in order to have a better commuter bike. Many would jump at the chance to do a fixed gear conversion on a frame like that, turning it the ideal weapon for a journey like Sandyford to Ranelagh.

I won't be getting rid of the pug just yeat. Had thought about making it into a single speed, maybe not fixie, but it needs a fair bit of work to get it back into shape and i don't really have the time just yet.

Most of the front wheel bearings are definitely gone, the wheel actually rocks, back wheel has a bit of a wobble, the brakes are in a bad state springs just about remove them from the rims and when you pull them they they are either on or off, the bottom bracket is starting to creek and the cranks and cassete have a fair bit of wear.

The final straw was when i pulled it out of the shed at the start of this week to start commuting again after a month break due to a cold, Xmas and being away and the chain was actually solid. I think it was more rust than chain, it actually went square when i eventually managed to turn the crank. The last time i'd rode it was went it was icey and the poor bike was covered in salt and rusted completely.

So I've been on the mountain bike with 2.3" fat ass tyres for the last week and its been torture getting back up the hill in the evening.
So new road bike for me and I can start planning my single speed conversion for the summer.
