Adjusting front dereilleur

    A newby question here...

I just got a new bike (Beone Briza) and as I'd expect from a mail order, the gears don't seem to be set up very well.

In particular, I;m having trouble with the chain rings - I can shift from smallest, to middle, to biggest, but when I try to go from biggest to middle, it skips it and falls straight to the smallest one.

I've had a look at Sheldon Brown and bicycletutor.com, but seeing as I don't know the name of the problem, I can't work out what to do.

I know I probably need to take it to an LBS to get a tune up, but I'd like to have a go myself, to learn. Any advice?

(and while I'm at it, if I do bring it to a shop, how much should I expect to pay - all it needs is a tune up of gears, and brakes too I suppose. Probably would head to either the one in UCD, or somewhere in Bray).

    Thanks

you need to play with the limit screws on the top of the front derailleur.

You want to adjust the L screw.

The guys in UCD are pretty good, or were when I was there anyway. Perhaps not the most technically proficient bike mechanics in the world, but if you leave it in the morning they'll usually have it by 6 unless its a sever problem, which it doesn't sound like. And they're very reasonably priced too.

Be sure that you're really going to the high gear with the shifter - some triple shifters have 2 middle-ring positions, to allow you to use it with the full range of the rear casette - so rather than having Inner-Middle-Outer they have Inner-InnerMiddle-OuterMiddle-Outer if you know what I mean. Anyway - it's possible that it's actually going to the Outer ring when it's actually in the OuterMiddle position, so when you drop down 1 position from there you end up in inner again - the cable tensions should sort that one out for you though.
Should be very easy to fix, will just take a bit of fiddling.

If you can't sort it, and bring it into a shop in Bray, go to Everest Cycles on the Dublin road, Ken, in there will look after you, he has been repairing bikes for over 20 years, since he left school.Or you could bring it to the cycle shop opposite Dunnes stores on the Quinsboro road, they are both under the same ownership.

I think this might be part of it alright - when I started playing with it a few minutes ago there did seem to be 4 positions. Although whatever I've done to it, now there seems to be only 2

I'll mess a bit more before resorting to a shop - sure it's all a learning curve!

    Thanks all for advise
