Buying 3G PAYG Iphone in Belfast - unlock and use down south - possible?

I'm vaguely thinking of upgrading my 1st gen Iphone to a 3G now that they can be unlocked etc.

So in theory what I'd do is go up north, buy one on PAYG and then jailbreak / unlock it for use down south. Is this possible or do they stop you buying the PAYG version if you don't have some sort of proof of residence?

If it is possible, will the 3G, GPS etc all work ok? Thanks.

Yes, I've done it for a friend O2 UK -> Vodafone Ire, everything works fine.

Lots of posts about it in the last few pages of this thread:
