I need to go to the social welfare office to sign on for Jobseekers benefit. What is the best day and time of day to go to avoid the worst of the queues which I know are inevidible anyway. The office I would be going to is Limerick city.

When I have to sign on monthly I make sure Im in there an hour before the office opens,so the cork opens at 9:30 im there for 8:30,by 9:00 theres a cue down around the corner as far as the eye can see,so my advice get in there in the morning as early as possible.

If it is a new claim you are making you will need to go to the office on your first day of unemployment, as claims are not usually back dated. Don't think there is a "good time" anymore, it used to be early in the morning, but unfortunately Social Welfare Offices are crazy busy all the time now. Bring a newspaper or your music with you to pass the time.

I sign on in Limerick City as well. The last few times I've been there an hour early. Unfortunately there's an element that arrives at 9.30 and go straight to the top of the queue.

Nobody says anything to them so I'm guessing they're the local criminals or something? Anyway it drives me mad. They think they're great and have a big laugh saying hello to all their mates......scumbags.

As someone has already stated, if you're unemployed you have to go now, as claims don't get back dated.

Bring a flask with some coffee, a bottle of water, and a book or an mp3 player. You may be there for hours, might as well get comfortable.

Was just there and have to wholeheartedly congratulate the Gardai. Great to see the usual 9.30 queue jumpers having to go to the back of the queue. Two tried to muscle in to the front of the queue and the ban Garda was superb "if you don't go to the back you'll be arrested"!!!! Hurray :) I felt like cheering then realised I might get stabbed so kept it in.

Was only there about 2 hours but the main thing is the people who continually come along late and push to the front were stymied.

    Long may it continue!

heh. It would be funnier if it wasn't completely true.

Still, maybe a letter to the Gardai thanking them for their presence? They may be more likely to continue if you show them what a help they were.

Fortunately i dont have to sign on every month as i dont live within a certain distance (16 miles i think) from the welfare office.
A person i know was threatened by a few of these scumbags who thought that he was jumping the queue on signing day. He tried to explain that he was only dropping in a letter to a different hatch. He wasent able to drop in the letter because he was told in no uncertain terms that he would get a hiding if he did continue.

Good idea! I was thinking about thanking them on the way out but they were busy with the crowds.

Would I just address it to the local Garda station or anyone in particular? Sorry to thread hijack king!:o

Possibly the Sergeant? I'm not particularly familiar with the structure of the Gardai I'm afraid :)

I'm sure simply addressing it "To Whom it May Concern" and mailing it to the local station is acceptable.
