    An adolescent fin whale that purposely beached itself off the Co Cork coast this morning has died.

    The whale was spotted stranded on a sandbank in Courtmacsherry at around 8am.

    The local lifeboat service attempted to assist the 18-metre mammal, but it refused treatment and died later in the morning.

    A Department of the Environment spokesperson said "It appears as though the whale thought it was arriving off the coast of Portugal, but when it realised it was actually Cork it decided to end itself
