Have a look at Codelobster. I use it from time to time. I complained last year that they didn't support syntax highlighting properly and they were kind enough to fix it in their next release. It's free too by the way.

In Windows I've started to use Komodo Edit, which I've found very much to my liking.

thanks for the suggestions, i think roadsend is quite cool, since it has its own php implementation and doesnt require apache or IIS to be instaled. I think at the moment its a toss up between notepad++ and roadsend

Totally agree with this. I always used Zend Studio. I switched to Zend Studio for Eclipse for a while but didn't really like it. Decided to try NetBeans a few weeks ago (had always used it for Java) and haven't looked back. The code completion takes a bit of getting used to (you have to pause after you type the $ or ->) but once you do it's great.

I vote for Netbeans. Very simple and lovely to use.
Also good for Javascript, CSS and (x)html.
There is also a separate debugger you can wire up to it.
    Its free!

Another vote for Netbeans... you can download the web dev kit version or just a php version which makes it very light weight.

Never tried Netbeans, but I swear by Aptana. OK, it's for more than just PHP, but it's quite good.

And thanks for that, it's made my life a lot easier.

Think there's a new version out in the last few days, keep getting a popup telling me to upgrade it.
