Registering alternate/typo domain names in .ie

A friend is registering a .ie domain name and asked me whether he should register variations for typos etc. because his name (which will be in the domain) is frequently misspelt. He was concerned about people who would enter his domain name into the browser rather than searching for his site.

    1) Should he bother registering additional domains (or should he rely on good content and other SEO methods)?
    2) Can typo style .ie domains be registered?

If it will catch people looking for his site, I think he should do it.

The IEDR will give him the domain if he explains his reason in the fax he sends them.

Should he bother? Depends on how much traffic they think they're losing

We registered several common typos and got traffic + email to them even though we never advertised them

It's not an issue registering them as far as the rules are concerned

I hope it turns out to be Jesus porn.

(I don't know what that is, but it sounds wrong!)

I'm so tempted to put that into a google image search, but I'll wait till I'm out of the office I think.

    It's a silly rule

A disgraceful decision (given that it was a discretionary name).

Aside from the so-called "offensive" domain names, I imagine you could just set up a few alternate registered trading names and it would be easy to register the corresponding domain names then?

"trading names" == RBNs? If so, then yes. You could save expense and apply for them under the discretionary category, though. Assuming they're relatively straight forward typo variations.
