Gratefulness and the recession

One thing I have noticed in the last several months, and moreso in the last two or three, is a new culture of people telling other people they should be grateful for x and y because 'there is a recession, y'know'.

People asking for advice about problems at work are told to be grateful they are not signing on, one person on a forum here was asking about the temperature of a working environment (was wearing coats and gloves in work and still freezing) and was told it's a lot colder in the dole queue, people upset about a reduced working week have people telling them its better than NO DAYS etc etc.

It's got to the stage that you feel you can't open your mouth about any problems without involuntarily engaging in some kind of weird recession top trumps.

It's like a kid not wanting his dinner and being told that the kids in Ethiopia would only have his eye out for a fine dinner like it.

Just shut up like. We know. Other people having worse problems doesn't stop you having your own.

Recession is good. People will start appreciating more what they have. I am looking forward to getting fired too.

What we really want is some really bad weather to take our minds off it. We want a fucking tsunami - now!

    Be grateful you can begrudge.
We're in a recession and not everyone is that lucky

The next time a TD comes looking for a vote at my door - I'm just grateful that I know where my shotgun is!

    O' yes, I'm grateful.

Having moved my life to another country and having to work very hard to where I am now, I have learned a long time ago to be grateful for what you have. Recession or no recession.

I guess the point I am trying to make is that people are being made feel like they have no right to refuse to accept substandard *whatever* because there is a recession.
