    hey all,

Im looking to head to roatan for diving during the summer, from a non qualified diver right through to divemaster, it takes about 10 weeks,

I was just wondering if anyone has been and has any advice??

If anyone knows how to get the best flights?

or if anyone could reccommend somewhere else that will do a divemaster internship that will do it so cheap?

    Thanks!

Never been to Roatan but went diving in nearby Utila a few years back. Lots of British/Irish/German divemasters working there doing instructors courses, etc. Not sure how much they were charging for courses but it is cheap, perhaps the cheapest place in the world in which to dive.
Remember paying $125 for 10 boat dives over 5 days. And they have whale sharks. Big whale sharks.

Haha yeah ive done a decent bit of research already, would love to see a whale shark (probably wont be as good as when i dived with great whites though ;) ) but its finding flights under €1000 that seems to be a problem!

RATM how much cash did you go through in a week in utila?? not including any diving expenses! and how did you get to utila?? ive read some of your other posts so did you come over from the mainland?? I have the option of utila too but i would probably be flying into roatan, could fly to mainland honduras possibly if that would be any better??

Its been 6 years since I was there so the memory on prices is a bit hazy. Beds were about $5 per night for a basic single room, you can get cheaper than that if you are staying a number of weeks of course. Beer and food was cheap too -around 50c for a pint, but I see it has gone up to nearly a euro a pint on Utila now:pac:

All in all Id say you'd easily survive there for €120 a week including bed, meals, beers but not diving obviously.

Flights to anywhere in Central America and S.America are never cheap, and if you want to fly all the way to Roatan then its going to cost more as there are changeovers involved. If I were you I'd find the cheapest return ticket to Mexico City and then backpack your way south for 2 weeks before getting the ferry to the Bay Islands and going diving. Thats what I did, stunning volcanoes to trek around in Guatemala and loads of ancient Mayan ruins to see along the way. A good beach down that way is Zipolite, awesome waves and a super chilled out backpacker atmosphere. By doing it this way you'll get cheaper flights and get to spend the money you saved on travelling a bit of Mexico and Guatemala:cool:
